Great North Wood Festival Sunday September 9th
10:00 - 18:00

Join London Wildlife Trust at Sydenham Hill Wood for the first-ever Great North Wood Woodland Festival!
Event Details
Address:
Sydenham Hill Wood and Cox's Walk
Crescent Wood Road
Sydenham
Post code:
SE26 6SB

Description
The Great North Wood was once a patchwork of wild woods and common ground that covered the low hills between Deptford and Croydon. The woods have largely been swallowed up by the growth of south London, but the Great North Wood lives on in local names (such as Norwood and Honor Oak) and in surviving sections of woodland, which still stand as havens for wildlife and nature.
The Festival of the Great North Wood will be a celebration of the Wood’s wildlife and history. Visitors to the festival will be able to enjoy a series of guided walks throughout the day, led by London Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers.
For families there will be storytelling, a woodland treasure trail and the opportunity to learn about wildlife in the woods through pond dipping and bug hunting. There will also be folk and acoustic music, refreshments and a tombola for all to enjoy. Toilets will also be available.
Graphic artist and local resident Tim Bird will also be on hand to discuss his new comic novel The Great North Wood, an innovative retelling of the story of this largely forgotten landscape.
The Great North Wood was very much a working woodland, supporting and supplying local industries such as shipbuilding, tanning and charcoal burning. Woodcraft still survives today, albeit on a much smaller scale, and there will be demonstrations of woodturning and carving for all to learn about these traditional skills.
Sydenham Hill Wood is located between Sydenham Hill and Forest Hill rail stations. It is also close to the Horniman Museum.
