It's several months now since The Capitol was named as one of the pubs that JD Wetherspoon chain would be closing. Anyone know of the likely timing for this and, more importantly, whether there are any development plans for the Caps building?

(Excuse me while I daydream about a cinema in the heart of Forest Hill in a former picture palace...)

Deafening silence. I assume nobody knows what is happening. The latest I can find is this CBRE/Savills brochure offering up a load of 'spoons pubs including Caps which is no. 13 in the link below.

They have some fantastic buildings, especially like the one in Newcastle, looks wonderfully historic.

Wetherspoons would love to have somebody else take over the lease but due to :-

- Grade 2 listed building status making internal changes difficult,

- high fixed lease and council taxes putting off prospective buyers,

none of the organisations who have been interested have gone ahead.

Which probably means it will stay with Wetherspoons until their lease expires, not sure exactly but I think it may be 2025?

I, for one, am very happy it is still operating as a Wetherspoons pub.

It's just been rated 16th of 18 Wetherspoons in SE London and Kent.
Strange place, but seems it is a victim of its own status. Can't imagine it having too many profitable uses without big changes internally (which are not permitted)

Sad really, as its a pretty dominant and iconic building for the area.
