We at Forest Hill SNT have over the years received a great many complaints concerning speeding motorists on various roads within the ward. I am writing to you now as there is an opportunity for you to take part in a new initiative, the Lewisham Community Road Watch scheme that I feel you may wish to participate. This is a joint initiative between Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police Service that has been designed to address community concerns over speeding.

All details should you require further information or wish to participate are contained within the attached letter;

Yours sincerely, Michael 195PL

Is this aimed at starting to enforce the new borough wide 20mph speed limit?

Speed checks are carried out fairly frequently, even before the 20mph limit. Michael can tell us more as I believe he has been involved in the past.

Garthorne Road has become a total rat run, with some of the cars speeding dangerously fast past parked cars, cyclists, pedestrians, pets. And getting impatient and rude as soon as anyone dares stepping in their way. Frankly I'd be pleased if they'd keep to 30 mph, let alone 20. Cursing

Yes I know I have been going on about this for 7 or 8 years now but I have long thought I would settle for 30mph on our 20 mph road. Highways did have one of those speed awareness indicators up for a while but removed it after a short while (the cynic in me suggested it was when it demonstrated that the average speed had not slowed a jot). I recall from watching the indicator that some cars were doing closer to 40 than 30 and very few even close to 20. This has not improved but there is always hope.....

A warning letter is not going to deter anyone. Speeding is a criminal offence and it needs formal policing.

Have you ever heard of anyone being prosecuted for driving at, say 25mph in one of the 20mph zones?

That is a fair point - and I guess their scarcity is due to cut backs.
But as long as a decent part of any fine was returned to the local police force, then with sensible positioning, the extra men would more than pay for themselves.

Plus I suspect there is a strong correlation between speeding, and all sorts of other criminal activity. The offenders might even turn out to be citizens of the EU. You gotta catch em all....
