Interestingly he has now been charged with attempted murder rather than just GBH.
So presumably he has been assessed to some extent, and found to be responsible for his actions.

Joining the dots, you have think that he had overindulged in some way, and then rather than waking up in his armchair 6 hours later with crosses in his eyes and a stupid smirk on his face, he has found out that he has near murdered someone and will spend the next 30 years in jail.

It is a sobering thought.
