If we want a physical deterrent, it can't be left to the other inmates - mostly in for drug possession or failure to pay their TV licence - it has to be a formal process.

Branding and the cat have been popular over the years and clearly there are still plenty who would be happy to administer the punishment.

On the face of it, it would be hard to feel much sympathy for him if something like this was administered, but once you give the courts (back) an option like this then you know they would make full use of it, despite most of the cases not being as clear cut or deserving of such violence.
