Why bother with courts and prison? Just set up a lynch mob.

If we want a physical deterrent, it can't be left to the other inmates - mostly in for drug possession or failure to pay their TV licence - it has to be a formal process.

Branding and the cat have been popular over the years and clearly there are still plenty who would be happy to administer the punishment.

On the face of it, it would be hard to feel much sympathy for him if something like this was administered, but once you give the courts (back) an option like this then you know they would make full use of it, despite most of the cases not being as clear cut or deserving of such violence.

When did prison become a place for revenge?

What the driver did was terrible. But as a civil society, his term in prison should be a time to learn the error of his ways and make amends.

What the BBC hold back is that he gets his licence back in 6 years - the judge's hands may have been tied in the sentence, but letting Andrew Nay back on the road is no less reckless than the original driving.

Can you actually get insurance in circumstances like this? More likely he will have to live without it?

It never occurred to me that insurance companies and the judiciary might have an understanding where motorists are not banned from driving for life for their offences regardless how reckless the driving.

Maybe these criminals are generally very good earners for the companies with extreme premiums payable for life - and it would be thought unfair to deny companies access to their key customers/profits.

Such an interpretation would be in keeping with the driving force behind TTIP and the like - the rights of companies outweigh the rights of individuals.
