Hello,
I was in The Watsons General Telegraph earlier on this evening and overheard a conversation about Stone Bar on Honor Oak Park. According to what I heard apparently it is only going to be open for two more weekends then will close - re-opening as a turkish restaurant.

Has anyone else heard anything similar / does anyone have any information on this?

Yes it is true I am very sad to see it go. I was in the Stone bar this weekend and John and Maxine, who run it are a lovely couple they have done so many functions for the local community it will be a big loss for diversity in the area, here's hoping that the Turkish resturant who is suppose to be taken over can live up to its predecessor. Smile

I must admit I had never heard of the "Stone Bar" until this thread but then again I do spend most of my time in FH. How long has it been there & what's the reason for it closing?

If the Turkish restaurant is a proper Turkish restaurant (and not a kebab shop) I think it will increase footfall in HOP because there's not many good quality traditional Turkish restaurants in SE London so this may pull people in from further afield if it is.

If this ends up being the case I think it will be a massive plus for HOP.

A Turkish restaurant sounds excellent and if it is good will save the drive to Greenwich, Lewisham or Dulwich.

I did hear there was an excellent Turkish restaurant in Brockley, but I've not been myself.

The Stone bar always seemed busy on Friday and Saturday nights, and I think they did salsa or something similar one week night.

The place itself changed names quite a few times, I think when we first moved it was a tequilla place or something, it was then taken over or rebranded to Bar Equal but I've not been in since those days.

Good news. The Stone bar was always empty whenever I walked past it which wasn't a surprise given the fact it resembled a soulless hotel lobby bar with nothing going for it other than it was close to the station.

Hopefully good use will be made of the premises as Honor Oak Park is woefully short of good places to eat and drink currently

I went there for a friend's birthday a couple of years ago. It was very nice - the food was good and it was friendly.

It is more of a late night bar than a restaurant and gets quite busy later on.

Does anyone know why it's closing?

I must admit I don't usually 'do' late bars these days and personally am more likely to use a Turkish restaurant, especially if it's as good as Meze Mangal on Lewisham Way which I think is the one OakR refers to.

So now we're back on-topic - any news on when the Turkish restaurant is likely to open?

I'm fortunate enough to live on HOP itself and had the pleasure of meeting the proprietor of the planned new Turkish restaurant over the weekend. I was making enquiries about jobs on offer for a friend's student daughter who is looking for part-time work and was invited in for a chat.

Sezar and his wife are planning to be open in 5-6 weeks time. The former Stone Bar has been completely gutted inside but I saw many of the beautiful items and décor that they have planned for the new restaurant. I understand it will serve a Turkish/Mediterranean menu.

I believe Sezar is a well-known Turkish pop star with many albums under his belt and he plans to have a small stage area for live music - not just for himself to perform but others. I had to confess I had not heard of him but I did look him up on You Tube!

Personally, I love Turkish cuisine and I am certain this will be another fantastic addition to HOP Parade. I assured him the community will support him in the same way as they have welcomed all the new enterprises on the Parade. He and his wife are very familiar with HOP as they have other business interests in the area and live locally.

I have lived here for 17 years and can hardly believe how much the area has changed, and in particular the HOP Parade which was pretty run-down and dismal when I first moved here. I feel extremely fortunate to live in HOP/SE23 these days. A true gem in South East London.
