I agree that Lewis has an inflammatory style but to call this a distortion of the facts is a bit rich. One Tree Hill is a hill: a geographic feature that has a nature reserve, allotments, roads, houses, a church and some cemetery land too.

Oh well. Thanks to those who expressed concern. It will probably lay the foundation for when the gravehuggers come back to the council in about 5 years asking to tear down the play equipment and rip up the football fields. I dare say they will have a tougher fight on their hands then.

Thank you lacb, I thought I was going mad. Crazy that some people insist that One Tree Hill is not a hill. Some only want their bit of turf defended - ie the Nature Reserve - and don't care about what is going on on the other side of a fence.

How can we stop the destruction of our greenspaces and heritage in the area?

Decker- We have been told that diggers are moving into land next to the Honor Oak Park station. People know about the Network Rail site- but this is larger and just a couple of metres away - hidden behind hoardings. When they come for the allotments or the Rec it may too late to organise the fight. That is why me must fight now. (see photo)

One of the most shocking things that Southwark can't or won't bury most Muslims. They say they can and do but this not true.

I want everyone to know what type of person you are.

Lewis tweeted;

"If #Grenfell was in @lb_southwark Christians wud get cheap local burial; Muslims & Jews wud get nowt."

Tell the relatives of those who burned to death that you think it's OK to joke about it. I so hope when they learn of what you have said, that they come, find and vent their anger all over you.

As you clearly hate the UK and our way of life, Go back to the cesspit you came from, NYC.

Who would think that it is joke? It wasn't and isn't. It is shocking that a council could discriminate against its Muslim residents the way Southwark is. Is Lewisham treating its Muslim residents the same?

Southwark is destroying our greenspaces and heritage and sports fields for a discriminatory burial programme.

We are going to tell people about it, even if it seems like a joke to you.

Save Southwark Woods and the Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries have been working to save trees on One Tree Hill - on all of the hill and not just in the Nature Reserve.

We have been fighing for the preservation of the open land next to the Honor Oak Park station. And to save the old graves and meadows in the Old and New Cemeteries. And the Rec ground, which is still unprotected by Southwark. The whole lot.

Attached please find a photo of an ex-tree on One Tree Hill.

We will be at the New Cemetery Gates (Brenchley Gardens) at 2PM Sunday - it is for familes who have loved ones buried in the cemetery and are concerned (rightfully) that the graves will be dug up and reused. Please join us.

I believe this is a myth.

Southwalk Council Wrote:
We currently have a segregated space for Muslim burial in Nunhead Cemetery. There are around 48 spaces remaining and based on current demand over the last 3 years we expect the current provision to last for another 5 years. Even if demand were to increase, this would still amount to 3 years of burial space. As such current provision does not discriminate against Southwark’s Muslim Community.

Southwark does not have a segregated space for Jewish burial. However, any residents, irrespective of any religious preferences, are welcome to use our cemeteries. In addition to dedicated areas for Muslim burial we also have plots located on un-consecrated land for multi-faith burial. As such Jewish residents are welcome to use our cemeteries and Southwark has already had 2 Jewish burials in the last 3 years.

I have personally attended a Muslim funeral in a Lewisham cemetery in the un-consecrated section, so I know that Muslims can and do get buried in Lewisham (and Jews could be buried in the same area).

But most Jewish burials in London take place close to the M25 on land which is purchased by the synagogues. However, burial in un-consecrated areas of council cemeteries is acceptable.

NOTICE - Please do not feed the publicity seeking L troll.

Their was a whole thread on the East Dulwich Forum which Admin finally Lounged. They are now seeking publicity through any other means possible, including purposely posting mis-information, plain lies and wanting people to have online arguments with them so they can continue to gain notice.

It is not a myth. It is fact.

Right now Southwark is providing for only a small number of Muslims - about 7 a year when almost 270 need burial. This is approximately half of all burial demand in the Boro. Most are forced to find burial provision outside the borough.

It is tragic that our valuable public spaces are being destroyed for a discriminatory burial policy.

Here are more details

7 Muslims buried in Southwark when as many as 270 die.

Would you be able to provide a link to the full statement by multifaith leaders? I would be interested to understand if the burials offered by Southwark are against Islamic practice or if there are certain preferences that are not obligatory that are provided by other non council providers.

There would be a big difference between religious communities opting into special arrangements within their community, and council cemeteries not able to provide the minimum necessary burial within religious guidance.

Michael
Email me at LewisSchafferpr@gmail.com and I will send you the faith leaders statements.

While a small percentage of Southwark's Muslims find the burial provided by Southwark satisfactory, the vast majority do not. The link outlines what the Muslim Community needs and was not prepared by us:

The photo below is of the area next to the Rec Ground. Burial is important to many but this space could have been used a needed playing field or a community orchard or left wild.

Southwark should have a better reason for destroying our vital public spaces than maintaining a discriminatory burial policy

Can't make this up:

Yesterday, Southwark honoured victims of a 1944 Nazi rocket attack with a ceremony and a plaque.

Meanwhile they rush through plans to destroy memorials and graves of war victims, possibly those very people, to sell off their burial plots.

Families are meeting tomorrow, Sunday at 2pm at the main gate on Brenchley Gardens to demand Southwark respect the dead and stop their burial projects.

We have had to cancel the Families Day Protest as it conflicts with the annual bereavement service - which Southwark only informed us of on Thursday.

Southwark is planning on maximising burial in the cemeteries by digging up the dead.

Five of the people whose deaths were commemorated with a plaque on Peckham Rye last Friday are buried on the side of One Tree Hill where graves will dug up, mostly these people.

Yes, we are reaching out to everyone, everywhere, to save our green spaces.

Here is a new rough cut video : The beautiful & doomed Camberwell Old Cemetery, E Dulwich. https://t.co/HOsZY1GLAd

It is only doomed if we do nothing. We are doomed if we do nothing.

Quote:
One way to reduce Southwark’s flooding is to ensure plenty of trees on the hills surrounding the borough and the Thames river-basin. When asked what councillors were doing about the need to urgently re-wood the naked hills surrounding the Thames basin, the answer was nothing. Even on hills that the Borough itself owns, it is felling the woods that had grown up in the Camberwell Old & New Cemeteries and the Honor Oak Nature Corridor.

Flooding is just one reason why Southwark devastating burial projects should be stopped and land on the Honor Oak Nature Corridor should be protected for nature.
