Yes Roz I was on the council waiting list as I previously stated and was told it would be years and years before I got offered anything - yet we see people having loads of kids and not bothering to work and going straight to the top of the list, he has told you about his relative who takes the p and ive told you about an ex work college daughter who has done the same for the last 10 years - so yea there are some that do take the p and make a career out of benefits, yes i agree that for those who have fallen on hard times [ redundancy/illness ] do need help as its not that easy to have savings now days for rainy days that may come over the horizon in the future

So now you've been working for 20 years, yet just having your second child? So you're in your 40s? With savings, but claiming benefits. What's the father doing throughout all of this? I assume he must have a well paid job if you both chose to have two children in London together? What does he do for a living?

Obviously, I understand if you don't want to reveal these details if it might jeopardise your benefit claims.

I think you are getting way to personal, especially since I know Roz in real life (and her lovely children). Most importantly I don't think Roz needs to explain her life choices to you, me, the forum, or nasty women in the street.

I suggest that all on this thread refrain for personal attacks and judgements on the family lives of other forum contributors.

Jeeps. After reading this and the gentrification thread over the last few weeks, I can't help but feel that CB needs to step right off. It's not even a question of 'tory' vs 'socialist' imo, it's automaton vs sentient, empathetic human being.
There's a lot of ugliness in CB's recent posts; I'm surprised a moderator hasn't stepped in Huh

I rarely comment on this forum but very much enjoy reading it from time to time. I have to say that although you are occasionally bang on in your assessment of issues, here you have displayed an absolutely breathtaking level of callousness, insensitivity & ignorance towards Roz. I hope you can read this back one day and see that, and also see that you can't force fit your ideology into Roz's (or anyone else's) personal circumstances. And it IS an ideology.
I fear that you most likely won't from your responses thus far but one can only hope.

My partner & I were forced to leave our beloved Forest Hill, we are young professionals and couldn't afford to live here anymore. I was born & raised here, lived here all my life. I know that it's the market, I know that London is apparently a 'world class city' and prices reflect this (particularly in central London). I also know we loved living here, we contributed locally both in economic & social terms. Now we are not. I very much doubt we are unique. Some things are more important than money & the market, like the ways in which we live together and foster healthy & vibrant communities through London's sons & daughters. If you place economy above all else I fear all our lives will be the worse for it.The economy should work for us, we should not be slaves to it.

I genuinely believe you owe an apology to Roz, this is not about your political standpoint any more and you need to realise you have insulted a lot of people here.

J.

Wrong that I've had to relocate? I don't know if it is wrong. I feel like it's wrong but then I would wouldn't I.
I understand the tenets of debate perfectly I can assure you.

I would assume that most here would agree regardless of political persuasion, no matter how heated you believe the debate became, you CLEARLY owe Roz an apology in this instance.

I will make no further comment but will leave it to your better judgement of course.

I think we all can see that this thread got off topic. It is out of tone with the site, in my opinion, which generally is to highlight areas of interest to the local population, and to attempt to address and improve or overcome local issues for the benefit of the community.

Regarding recent comments on this thread, I believe that documenting your life in detail on an online forum to provide anecdotal evidence to support a more generally held principle is a bad idea. The experiences are opened up for examination, arguably rightly so. While the experiences may be sacrosanct to the person in question and reaffirmed by confirmation bias over a lifetime, this does not make them unquestionable. On the other hand, I would suggest that when questioning a person's life decisions, they are treated with more delicacy than non-personal evidence.

As my good friend Aristotle once said: “To perceive is to suffer.” If you can't empathise with someone or their point of view, then you should probably reflect on that for a while before responding.

I yearn for a return to the time when the forum is filled with burst water mains and comments on parking and street lighting. Things used to be achieved. I do not believe that this thread has achieved anything positive.

"the vast majority of FH residents that make a net contribution to society in tax, as well as the social contribution we all make"

Actually those people (including me) are speaking for themselves in response to your arguments.
