Lewisham Council is indeed hamstrung and (apparently) unable to either resist the imposed cuts or think their way creatively round the current situation, so they are effectively the Tories lackeys at the moment...

Agree with you Michael, it's not a job i'd want...

This area is gentrifying. There are aspirational people moving in and buying homes - making a long-term investment in the area - yet there is no one in the council that represents us. There is so much fuss made by renters and council tenants, and the handwringing lefties that are co-dependent on them. But what about the rest of us? People who have used their life savings, and the next 25 years of earnings to invest in this area by buying a (single) home? Labour does not speak to me. All I hear from them is vitriol about people like myself who want to succeed in life, as independently of the state as possible.

Yay! Class war! Bring it on! We hand-wringing lefties are up for it!

Is SE23 really becoming gentrified? It has had other periods in the not so distant past when it seemed it would and then it died away again as soon as a recession appeared.

I'm not so sure a seemingly impregnable Labour local authority does stand in the way of aspiration. It didn't hold Islington back.

Interesting. It would be more interesting if it gave numbers rather than % change. If the previous figure was very low as you might suspect it was then a 30% change is a drop in the ocean.

Is 'working in culture, media or sport' a proxy for 'aspirational'?

If the number was very low then the re-opening of Forest Hill swimming pool might account for a lot of the increase with direct/indirect employment in Sport whether you teach sport/lifeguard/work in the cafe/do the IT etc.

I always see the Labour party as the aspirational party, the Conservatives as the party of the establishment, there is another party I should mention but I forgot their name. I don't think Labour hold the area back if anything it attracts the Prosecco socialists into the area if they feel the area has a bit of an edge but not too much and of course housing is cheaper than the more established areas.

Are 'young management consultants, bankers and lawyers' nice people on the whole? I'm not sure I know any. Would they make good neighbours? Do they have noisy parties? Would they take in your parcels for you? Would they look after your keys and put your bins out when you're on holiday?

Except that FH never had any of the 'edge' that other areas of south London where I have lived over the past 40 years such as Brixton and Clapham did. We picked FH from the possible choices of locations to buy a house in the 1980's because it seemed to be a fairly ordinary, cheap slice of south London. Interesting looking back to think how much better the return on the money would have been if one of the above had been chosen instead.
That article on the changing demographics of various parts of London over the past 20 - 30 years seems spot on. Those aspirational types used to be called 'yuppies! for a good reason.

Thanks, that's reassuring.

Now, I'm all about succeeding in life, and coincidentally also recently moved to FH, however I have no aim in life to live as independent of the state as possible.

If I ever was to have tax credits available to me, I would use them. Do I plan on taking a state pension in addition to any private pension in many years time if it was offered to me? Yes. There is no shame in taking from state or even being dependent on the state - I suggest that you steer clear of implying anything that could be interpreted to the contrary.

Your seem to make the point that the council does not support younger affluent constituents. I suggest that you would better further your aims by highlighting relevant cases and leaving out blanked statements bout political parties and their ideologies.

I'm always a bit uncomfortable about 'aspiration'. 'Aspire' to what? Food, shelter, warmth, health, physical security, obviously. Living a good and useful life, probably. Marriage, children, providing a warm, loving and stimulating environment for them to grow up in, possibly. But 'succeeding'? Not sure it's a very robust principle on which to base one's life plan.
