As of course you well know TJ, everything decent that Lydon did was either because of Malcom McClaren or others such as the late great Johh McGeoch (sp?) and/or Jah Wobble at PIL.
I work with a chap who seems to have met everyone from the late 70s and early 80s. He used to hang around a certain shop on the Kings Road with the Pistols and the other hangers on (amusing comment on those 'provincials' the Bromley Contingent (see: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fkHPgeCdztA).
He was telling me about a great commotion one Saturday, even more racous than normal. "It's her again", "no she's gone", "she's back again". The excitement was because Val Singleton, then of course still in Blue Peter had passed by, thought about coming into Malc and Viv's shop, chickened out, and then repeated the action. The sign of a great story teller, not one that you try to compete with, but memorise it to share with others.
