I understand the boarded up shops were vacated to make room for a Sainsbury's expansion which took rather a long time to happen (as opposed to shops just empty).

I think I remember the middle platform being there in 1987 when I went to FH once. Bit hazy though, long time ago!

It was well before 1987 when they had the middle platforms. It went before the current concrete monstrosity was built in the 70s.

I'm not sure when they went - I'm guessing mid-late 1970s.
They were certainly there in 1926 as these photos show.

I have just been looking through the photos, that were posted here by Steve Grindlay.
They have certainly brought back some memories.
I lived in Sydenham park, in the prefabs, by the railway bridge, in the 1950's.
I went to Holy Trinity school.I used to go swimming in Forest Hill baths.
I bought my first " Serious camera " from Kirk Cameras, in 1971, it was a Yashica-mat 21/4 square TLR camera.
Pictures of Honor Oak station, also have memories, i used to get the train to London Bridge, in the 1960's when i worked in Threadneedle Street.I lived in Ackroyd road then & later in Bovill Road
Great memories, thank you very much for sharing the photos Steve & thanks for the memories.

Thanks, it was good to hear the positive comments, but I don't think I'm being too picky by mentioning that not all the photos were by Steve Grindlay and that he had no direct input into this thread.

The BBC had a report on its local news yesterday. Collage, a London archive company have added more photos of old London, which are available online. There are 8 of Forest Hill station in this link. Type out your road and see if thats available.

Well kids, I can remember getting on a train hauled by steam engine from the middle platform when I was a small child.
I was also very familiar with the quite large goods yards and sidings at FH.
Used to collect bags of coal from there in winter in a pram
I now live alongside the main railway line to Cornwall; recently I bought two books from a bookseller in Penzance, once, the bookseller would have sent them by the train guard and I could collect them from my local station 4hrs later.
Sent express by one of our 2016 services they arrived chez moi 3days later.
such is progress.
BR Red Star service worked quite well until a few years ago, now you can't get a bike sent on ahead; a friend of mine who lived in Scotland would buy a motorcycle from Pride and Clarke in Stockwell, and it would be sent by train to him, and he'd collect from his local station.
Modern life is so convienient, now I can get carrots delivered to my door via my computer, that saves me going into the garden to pull some up.
