Sorry to revive this long running thread but I am lucky to be able to do so. At 21.15 this evening whilst walking up from London Road, I was nearly taken out by a Ford Focus doing an illegal turn from Honor Oak Rd into Manor Mount. Had I been a second earlier I would not be here to write this. The moron driving didn't even have normal excuse of congestion. They were coming up from London Rd and turned right, not only missing me narrowly but also just avoided being hit as they cut across the path of the car coming down the hill. Obviously the policy of the authorities is to do nothing except make excuses until somebody is killed. Surely the technology exists to monitor this junction with a camera that could be triggered by any vehicle turning illegally into Manor Mount and then take away the licence and the vehicle of any B*****d who ignored the No Entry sign. Cursing

Happens all the time, I saw two this evening at around 4:45. There is a camera car there now and again but only in daylight. There was also a dark coloured car with it's side taken off at the bottom of the hill where the one way drivers canning it down the hill dont make the corner.

This my absolute pet-hate, and it happens so frequently. Over the summer I started to pretend to take photos of people driving down the road illegally, until one of them stopped to have words!

Pleased to see that the CCTV car has been there a lot more recently, and hopefully if it keeps coming it will help make people think twice before trying it again. Definitely agree that a more permanent solution would be best.

Part of the problem is that it is such a wide, empty and welcoming road for people wanting to take the short cut. I wondered whether a relatively cheap solution would be to have some unrestricted/non-CPZ parking bays right at the top of Manor Mt, perhaps at an angle rather than parallel to the pavement, in order to restrict the road width a bit and introduce a bit more uncertainty for those considering the turn.

Yes, far more suitable for traffic than many roads in the area that do not enjoy the benefit of No Entry or cul-de-sac arrangement

At the top maybe, but not at the bottom on David's Road or Waldenshaw Rd.

Yes. All it does is move the traffic jam off the South Circular on to a local road. It doesn't help anything. In fact is probably makes it worse because then the South Circular won't flow as well

So the South circ will not flow so well with less traffic?
Is traffic flow like capillary action then, with cars naturally drawn along our narrow roads unassisted, as long as we keep them tightly packed?

Likewise should we also cut the bottom 1/2" off the lampposts so they'll keep their decorations longer or is that an urban myth?

The cars coming down Manor Mount start and end in the same location as if they took the South Circular. You are not taking traffic off the South Circular are you? It's not that hard to understand.

It flows even worse because instead of having a constantly flow on the south circular, you will have cars trying to re-join the south circular off Manor Mount/Davids. Causijg the flow to actually slow down as people try and get back on it.

Two cars written off at the bottom of Manor Mount this week on different days but thats OK, just so long as people can get somewhere faster. I am sure this will never happen if it was two way, No Sir. Never.Glare

Seems to me that speeding and the sudden bend are the real problems on this road.
Speeding is common in SE23 and nothing is done about it. The policy seems to be let them crash. And they do.

All the same it seems fair play to give some sort of warning at the bottom of Manor Mount that the road is about to dog-leg and is actually still a 2-way at this point.

Perryman, at that point it is one way, only two way up till Pearcefield Avenue. Also, doing 20mph you have to have something really wrong if you cant take that corner without crashing.

Now I've got confused again about which bits are one way... I think I misunderstood your answer when I asked about this a few pages back, maybe because I used the wrong street names (and got left and right wrong!)
The bit I'm not clear about is Manor Mount, between the two entrances to Pearcefield Ave. I had always assumed it was one way, and really there's no good reason to go along Manor Mount from the Davids Rd end rather than going round Pearcefield but there are no signs on that small stretch.
Also, when you are coming out of Pearcefield, the sign at the junction warns you that you are coming on to a 2-way street (google street view link: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.441239...312!8i6656 )

BUT... the arrows on google maps suggest it is one way.

So, if you were parked outside the church, can you legally do a u-turn to go up the hill??

Actually, I think you can unless there is a separate block on a U-turn at this point. This is equivalent to asking whether the ambulances can only leave the depot by turning right. I do not think this is the case, it is a 2 way street at this point.

It's not 2 way at that point - you need to take the road past the Sainsburys car park to go back up the hill that way

Well in that case the road signs are wrong at the end of Pearcefield Avenue. Or at least the ones photographed by Streetview and referred to by Sandpiper are. These show a 2 way street.

Can ambulances turn left out of their station?
I thought they could.

If it was compulsory to have a tracking device in every vehicle a number of solutions become possible. You would automatically fine vehicle owners for infringing the following rules.

Two way but only outside rush hour.

Two way if only visiting Sainsbury's (i.e. not exiting onto South Circular within 60 mins.)

Two way if the vehicle is registered locally.

Having endured the pain of London gridlock for the last two days I suspect tracking control is the only long term solution for our roads.

I've certainly seen them do that.
