Manor Mount one-way system

Morning all,

Is there anything that can be done to restrict vehicles turning off Honor Oak Road onto Manor Mount? As most of you will know, this is a one-way part of the road for vehicles turning onto HOR from MM only. I walk my daughter up MM most evenings from nursery and I would say that 3 out of 4 of those evenings I see cars speedings down MM in the wrong direction. They are clearly so hell bent on speeding down that road undetected that I feel it is only a matter of time before they collide with a car or a pedestrian. It's really terrifying and infuriating. Perhaps cameras might help?

It really does make walking around around that part of Forest Hill feels unduly dangerous.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but would be good to get some current feedback.

Just found the other posts on this. Looks like SE23ers have been complaining about this since 2008 at least! Also looks like there has been random police enforcement action but clearly to no avail!

I appreciate the one-way sign is arguably not that visible but I don't think that's the blame for the majority of those speeding down the road.....

I am afraid not. Occasionally the council send out a CCTV car and the police attended once. I got beeped yesterday morning by a lady in a black BMW because I had the audacity to cross the road in front of her whilst she was taking her darling to school. I pointed out she was going the wrong way down a one way street, she told me to Eff Off.

I have been threatened to be stabbed by a yoof on a scooter, the police did act on this and they were superb.

If you feel safe to do so, take a photo on your phone and post up here so we can name and shame. (Guardianistas, please note that this is perfectly legal as the photo is being taken in a public place).

It is also worth noting that a few people who live on Manor Mount are guilty of this themselves.[/align]

Thanks for your response, Londondrz.

Surely an option worth exploring is that of more prominent signage and a permanent speed-style camera in place. Do we really need to wait until someone is injured before the council / police / whoever do anything?

This option was looked at a number of years ago and rejected due to cost. It followed a survey of speeds on Waldenshaw and Manor Mount which found that the average speed on Waldenshaw was c30 mph on Manor Mount it was 40 mph, the wrong way on the one way.

Whatever you do, DO NOT park at the bottom of Manor Mount/St. David's Road, you will get crashed into.

So the survey found that the average speed was 20 miles per hour above the speed limit going the wrong way down a one-way street? And they rejected the camera option due to cost? That is thoroughly depressing and makes me very angry. What a load of s**t.

completely agree with Londondrz.
Take a photo if it is safe to do so, or at least hold up your phone in the 'taking a photo' position and make sure the driver sees it. Drivers are less likely to persist in this behaviour if they think members of the public will not tolerate their illegal activities.

Post the photo on here or send it to the Forest Hill police ForestHill@met.pnn.police.uk

Thanks for the link Michael.

I cannot stress enough that you should only take a photo if safe to do so. I am a fairly large guy and am amazed that people will front up to me when caught out. Just be careful out there.

Thanks very much!

At the moment I only manage an evil stare, some fist waving and a few expletives under my breath....

Must agree, it is shocking that something has been allowed to persist for SO long.

I think now ironically it would be better to remove the one way, make it congested again, and slow the road down! Confused

Strange way to look at it I know, but at least pedestrians would expect two way traffic, and motorists would not be able to go so fast.

PS, I realise this is not a preferred option, and don't blame the locals for that, but with Lewisham's resistance to doing anything about the road....

I can't understand how it would be too expensive to either make it REALLY difficult to get into the road the wrong way, or send someone to collect FPN's all day long. Im sure the person charged with the duty, and the subsequent paperwork would be covered by the FPN's At least for a month until people (the persistent offenders) get fed up of fines.

Hell, I might just go and sit with the dash cam running then hand it to the police at the end of the day, if they are willing to follow up.

you would think that the fact that there are two nursery schools just off MM and pedestrians use it coming from the statioon, that might motivate the powers that be.

In my experience, Lewisham Council couldn't give a toss but maybe they actually have no money. Like, none at all. I don't know.

Is this one for our local Councillor to look into on our behalf? Whoever he or she is?

Is the St John's ambulance station still operational?
This was the reason the one-way system was implemented - so they could get out quickly down Davids Rd.

If this is no longer the case, then the 1-way system should go.

It is an NHS supply station for ambulances. Given the confusion by making part of the road structure two way and part one way (unless you are suggesting St. Davids be two way, I hope not, way too narrow) I would expect to see a number of accidents in fairly short order.

The issue is not caused by 99.9% of drivers, just those idiots who DGAF (Google for definition, it's a bit fruity for here Laugh).

I can confirm from personal observation that the Boys in Blue were indeed active on Manor Mount today. I saw that they had pulled over a vehicle which had obviously been going the wrong way, and apart from anything else seemed to be giving the vehicle a good going over for any deficiencies in respect of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use Regulations) or whatever ordinance is relevant these days.

Great to see they made the effort. I wonder what time it was? I hope between 7.30 am and 9.30 am and 4pm through 7pm otherwise it would like taking the Chairman of Southern onto one of his trains at mid day to demonstrate overcrowding.

A supply station does not sound like it needs great consideration -- the ambulances are perhaps not hot to go - just stocking up at the end of the shift. Is this a reasonable assessment?

I don't think there is much confusion about Davids Rd - it is clear why it has to be a one-way. The question is why the traffic is choked off at the top of Manor Mt and I don't see why it should be, any more than the other steep roads off of Honor oak Rd.

I feel it is a misuse of resources to actively enforce this, especially when police funding is supposedly being cut back.
