This is the theme for Bonhoeffer Day 2016

Feb 27th, 2.00pm – 8.00pm, at the German Church, 50 Dacres Road

Quote:
The 1930s and 40s were marked by a displacement of people in Europe on a scale never seen before: Countless families and individuals fleeing their home country, whole populations being moved, resettled and expelled, millions of soldiers on the march across the continent, as well as the millions of prisoners on transport to the deadly destination of the concentration camps …

What does it mean to live in exile? Where does the émigré belong? Who is the person uprooted from his or her home?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer could have been one of those people – and in the end he did become one of them. But already before his own uprooting he and his friends, like Bishop George Bell, had a sense of what it means for someone’s own identity as a Christian to live in a time of universal displacement.

The presentations and discussions on Bonhoeffer Day 2016 will focus on these questions. The implications for the contemporary refugee crisis will also be addressed.

Music comes from the project “Singing a Song in a Foreign Land” featuring works from musicians who emigrated from Nazi Germany (http://www.rcm.ac.uk/singingasong/).

The Programme:
  • 14.00 Welcome (Frank Hirth)
  • 14.15 Andrew Chandler, George Bell Institute Chichester: George Bell and the Piety of Resistance, 1939-1945.
  • 15.15 Music: Singing a Song in a Foreign Land I
