We are changing the way we collect waste and recycling from houses and flats in houses in Lewisham (those that typically have collections from a wheelie bin). But before we decide how to change our services we want to know what you think.

Any opinions?

Consultation?

I think Jim Royle would reply with his famous catchphrase.

Lewisham's idea of consultation is akin to the use of the word democratic in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Its going to be weekly food collections and two-weekly for everything else.

It does seem as though they have made up their minds already.

I do like the way all of the recycling goes in one bin - this seems like the best way to go to encourage participation - KISS and all that. Fewer bins too.

As I understand it, the issue with wet paper is that the recyclers are used to paying for it by weight and water bumps up the cost (to them). Given the scale of this I wonder if there is an automated assay solution, or, given that it is going to get wet anyway to make a pulp, perhaps it could be weighed wet? Anyone know more about this?

If they recycle too much how will they feed the fires at Landman Way? Buy in refuse from other boroughs?

So did I gather from that survey that Lewisham want us to have: wheely bin, paper recycing box, other recycling bin, food waste bucket? Oh, and green waste bin if we pay at least £80 a year for it? Does anyone use 80 of those green bags a year?!

And the general bin only to be emptied every two weeks?

Sounds dreadful.

I think that if you live in a flat (as lots of Lewisham residents do especially in the north of the borough) you will be able to use fewer bins. However, due to the mixing issue I guess the contents of these bins will go up in smoke rather than be recycled.
