Taking kids to Legoland tomorrow as a treat and hoping to have left home by 9am-possibly earlier- unsure of the best route to avoid the usual snarl ups; thought of going on the Sth Circ all the way to Chiswick Roundabout but perhaps the M25 via the A23 at Purley would be best. Any advice appreciated.

At that time on a Saturday morning you might be as well to go through town - up to London Bridge and along the river to Hammersmith and then out along the A4 to the M4 is direct and without too much traffic it's probably quicker than going the more circuitous routes.

Putney via A205 then M4.

I've got a couple of Free Adult entry vouchers (must be accompanied by another adult or child) if you want them.

Agreed that going through town at that time of the morning will be fine. We go round the South Circ to Clapham then over Battersea Bridge, past Earl's Court to join the A4.

According to google, this last is the likely quickest route - just over an hour without traffic.

I do this route regularly. I always go through Lordship Lane, Camberwell, Oval, Vauxhall Bridge, Embankment, Earls Court, Hammersmith Flyover. Its a good route if there's no traffic. When its busy the Embankment/Earls Court stretch is usually the worst bit but at the time you are going it should be fine.

A little late now but I use the South Circ./Wandsworth bridge/Peterborough road/Parsons green lane/Kelvedon road/Davies road/Lille road/Fulham palace road to Hammersmith route. I was shown this route about 30 years ago and despite the road calming measures introduced more recently in the mid section it still works.

rshdunlop and zee mention the two alternatives we use most often.

This might not be very helpful:
Camberwell, Waterloo, Euston, Mornington Crescent.

I win!

Curses! I didn't realised we were playing the Zarbov 1964 rules as amended by the Budapest Protocol.

Going out just followed South Circular-coming back Hsmith Flyover then Battersea Bridge- wished Id gone Sth Circ again.

As ever once on the M4 its about half an hour to Legoland so thats the easy bit!

Thank you Millie mop for your kind offer- w ed bought a package already however.

Can recommend the Legoland Hotel: overpriced but not extremely for three kids where most other hotels require you to book an additional room. And very clean, good food and immensely entertaining for children and parents. The ease of getting from the hotel into the park and back again a real bonus. As themes go it must be the best on offer.

Going out and coming back is comparing apples and oranges. Especially if done at a different time of day. Coming back in to London from the West is almost always slower than getting out. There's no guarantee you would have been any faster taking the South Circ all the way (and I'm not just saying that because I recommended the Battersea route!).

That M4 route through Earl's Court to the Cromwell Road is a bit of a pain at the weekend as they allow parking along that route from the King's Road northwards which reduces the road capacity, with a knock-on effect back to the Embankment. I would only use that route early morning before the traffic builds up.
