Traffic seems particularly awful today. The only traffic moving was the cars doing 3-point-turns to head off in the opposite direction.

I guess there's still the roadworks/water main repair in HOP but today is just dreadful.

Any clues as to why? (Comments about this being London and it's full of cars will be met with a hard stare...)

The BBC say there is a gas leak in Dartmouth Road with repairs and temporary traffic lights causing delays on the South Circular (A205).

From ThisisLocalLondon:-

"Emergency gas works near Forest Hill station are causing severe delays.
Transport for London (TfL) has reported the A205 London Road, the South Circular Road, has only one lane operational.
The repairs are taking place along London Road at its junction with the A2216 Dartmouth Road.
This is due to emergency repair work following a gas leak.
Temporary traffic lights have been put in place.
There is congestion on the A205 through Catford to the A20, Clifton's Roundabout in Eltham, along the A21 Bromley Road to Bellingham, and on the A205 Dulwich Common to the A2199 Croxted Road, West Dulwich.
TfL are warning motorists to expect delays in the area this morning (February 27).
Bus routes 122, 176, 185, 197, and the P4 are reportedly experiencing delays of up to an hour as a result."

BBC London page (http://www.bbc.co.uk/travel/london/incidents/road)
reports SEVERE DISRUPTION (not medium, or minor).
Gas leak, Temporary Traffic lights and Emergency repairs.

So keep clear of Forest Hill unless you are on train, on bike or on foot.

While walking the dogs this morning it was as pathetically dangerous as it always gets when roads are blocked.
Cars driving the entire length of Church Rise, only to exit onto the South Circ on the wrong side of the road. Forcing oncoming cars to pull over.
Outside of traffic at 30mph +

Ridiculous behaviour, and very dangerous during the school run too.

Shame on these people.

If any of the local police /PCSO's are out there could you have a nose around FH for those drivers who seem have lost their senses. The driving by some drivers is idiotic, by others just plain lethal.

I put a lot of the blame on the gasworks company. The assets they used to set up traffic control were not adequate.

Shutting down one of the busiest roads in London with 2 tiny temporary traffic lights. And the expecting drivers to behave normally?? One thing you can always count on is that drivers will be stupid/impatient. So you have to plan to that. Nothing set up for pedestrians either. Shambles.

On the way to work I just took one look and laughed at their set up and thought..... This will be chaos. I'm glad I'm not around today!

I noticed a locksmith breaking into From The Forest yesterday morning accompanied by two Gas people so I'm assuming the leak stemmed from that building?[/b]

This is all we need with no trains this weekend either. Can see the bus replacement service is going to be horrendous!

A fleet of those little scooters would be a good idea. Children go like the clappers with those!

On the positive side, I can report that the top of Honor Oak Road by Fairlawn School has now re-opened.

At least the P4 and the rail replacement bus can run along there again.

Nobody appears to be working on the gas "emergency" that is causing traffic chaos in FH and surrounding areas.

- downed tools for the weekend? Will be fun on Monday morning.

Well played Southern Gas.

Nottinghillbilly, there is (or there was, at least) a sign attached to the front of From the Forest pretty much stating exactly that - that the gas company had had to break in because there was a leak on the premises and they hadn't been able to get hold of anyone to let them in.
