Rail engineering works

Just a heads up that it looks like there are no trains at all from Forest Hill or HOP at all this weekend. Engineering works on the line mean Overground trains not running south of NXG and Southern aren't running.

On the plus side the weather looks like it will be miserable so may as well stay at home anyway... Cursing

However the increased replacement bus service returns.

6 buses per hour between London Bridge and West Croydon.
4 buses per hour between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace.

For those of us on the Sydenham side of Forest Hill, Penge East is a good alternative on these weekends. Fast trains to Victoria.

To go to London Bridge, we can take trains from East Dulwich, North Dulwich, Ladywell Lewisham, Peckham Rye. It looks like they will be running according to the train website.

These stations are easy to go to by bus from HOP/Forest Hill area. I have found it much easier to use alternative train stations rather than waiting ages for a replacement bus which ends up to be full and unable to take on more people.

Also Catford trains which run in to Blackfriars and Catford Bridge trains that run in to Charing Cross via Waterloo East.

There are ten buses per hour.

Six are double decker buses calling at ALL stations including Crystal Palace except Penge West and additionally call at Selhurst.

Four are single decker buses which call at all stations between New Cross Gate and Crystal Palace.

In theory, there should be a bus every 5 mins from FH and HOP. Overground trains start from New Cross Gate, so is worth getting one, even if it goes to NXG.

Personally, if you're going to Victoria this weekend, get the 185 bus instead.

Alternatively, for some the 171 goes to New Cross Gate.

I think you can get a train to Victoria from Crofton Park station. From Forest Hill the 122 will get you to the station.

If it was only one weekend it wouldn't be so bad but over the next 5 weeks we only have trains one weekend - March 14/15th!

Although Penge East may be a good alternative for some it is in zone 4 so for those on Oyster PAYG the daily cap is £9.20 not £7.50!

Not any more. Since Thameslink took over, the Sunday service now terminates at Blackfriars.

You can change at Nunhead, Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill for the new Sunday service to Victoria, or stay on the train and change at Blackfriars for the tube.

So, it's got nothing to do with London Bridge. Southern are still running some services on the 2 express tracks in the middle.


So it just sounds like random track/signalling maintenance.

Nope, no London Bridge trains through Forest Hill on Sunday. Look at the Southern website, or try planning a journey on TfL. It's all replacement buses.

I think the point being made is that Southern is still running reduced services into LB this weekend that will pass THROUGH FH (on the inside tracks) but will not STOP at FH.

So this suggest the engineering work isn't Southern/London Br influenced necessarily.

Last weekend's limited service was due to Cross Rail works at Whitechapel. This weekend is listed as Network Rail track and station improvements.

Sorry if I misinterpreted the post about London Bridge. I hadn't seen anyone suggest the LB situation was to blame for the weekend closures.

In the past, Network Rail were able to close one set of lines and run a stopping service on the other, circulating customers between Norwood Junction and London Bridge.

It now seems to be the trend to close the stopping lines all together and send everyone on the bus.

Whatever they are doing demands some serious plant. The car park in Perry Vale is being closed each of these weekends to accommodate the machinery. Half of it has already been fenced off this morning. We've had partial closures of this car park in the past (there is access to the tracks from the top end) but I can't remember a full closure before.
