Train this morning got cancelled. On the journey back at lunch time, 4 trains in a row got cancelled. Abysmal blame pushing between the involved parties. Fed up. Must go order more Prozac.

TfL on Twitter:
"We expect Canada Water stn to be very busy this evening due to @SouthernRailUK disruption. Please avoid/take alternative routes if possible"

Due to several victoria trains being cancelled this morning I took the 185 bus - and it was quite a pleasure!

due to the london bridge cancellations Canada Water was beyond crowded on the westbound Jubilee platform at 8 this morning.
its really grim and dangerous too-especially with the poor access down to the jubilee from the overground.
the 5 car trains are just as packed at peak times and make the interchange even more unpleasantSad

From the Newsshopper:-

"Southern Railway customers faced 'overcrowding' this morning (March 10) after disruption at London Bridge yesterday (March 9) meant trains carried less coaches.

A statement released by Southern says: "Following yesterday's disruption a number of our trains have become displaced and were unable to return to the depot overnight, as a result of this the following morning peak services will be shorter than usual."

The 8.01am Uckfield to London Bridge was formed of two coaches instead of four.

And the 8.49am East Croydon to London Victoria via Norbury is formed of five coaches instead of 10.

A spokesman added: "We are very sorry for the overcrowding which will occur on these services as they approach London."

the rush hour trains home from Canada Water were indeed very busy last night, with the platform rammed, and half the people on the platform unable to board the 18.26 train to West Croydon, which was NOT a 5 car train. Clearly there is insufficient capacity on the Overground to deal with the overflow from L Bridge. Is there any attempt at co-ordination between Southern and the Overground to deal with this?

It was probably best that things were so bad last week and someone was quick enough to capture those people diving under the barriers.

The media attention is bringing the issues to a national level. MPs from all areas affected are now pushing/calling for Government to do something. So hopefully this leads to some more resources / expertise thrown at the problem.

Stop the press! This morning 9:12 to LB arrived at........wait for it........9:12!

I am unreliably informed by a completely non-existent person that the 9.12 did not arrive exactly on time.

It was the previous day's train, exactly 24 hours late.

Laugh

It's about time measures were taken to resolve this. The 9.29 yesterday finally rolled into London Bridge at 10.36.

Full credit to the driver who apologised kept the passengers informed with regular updates.

I'm going to try to summarise a 3 hour meeting yesterday into a few bullet points. The meeting included Network Rail, Southern Rail, LOROL, TfL, Thameslink, Lewisham councillors, Lewisham transport officers, and representatives from civic societies.

* Network Rail claimed that other than the odd day (where the service falls apart), services were beginning to perform at a much better level on Southern. SouthEastern were doing really well. I did point out that they are now scheduling some services through Forest Hill to take 50% longer (24 minutes rather than 16 minutes), so it is not surprising that some trains are now actually arriving early and performance targets appear to be met. However, reliability is really important and it is good that they are at least getting better at running the service they say they will, except when they don't.

* Network Rail told us that some of the early problems in January were due to drivers not being familiar with the new signaling system, but they also admitted to defects with some of the signaling/points systems. This included Monday when an engineering truck was properly parked out of the way, but the signals thought it was on a different line - so they had to close most of the railway for a day.

* Network Rail informed us that London Bridge had not reached dangerous levels of passengers, as judged by their emergency safety protocols. But they have learned lessons and would be improving the systems (presumably more holding pens as well as more sheep dogs to herd the stray passengers)

* I raised concern about station staff not knowing where replacement bus services stopped, and drivers having the same problem. I suggested that bus stops are clearly marked as replacement rail bus stops for the benefit of passengers and drivers. The road closure problems two weeks ago clearly had a knock on effect - but hopefully the operators will improve the systems

* I got a firm 'No' to my request for late night services beyond 2017 to go south of New Cross Gate. In response I promised the raise the issue regularly over the next two years until they change their minds.
* Overground now have 85% of trains at 5 carriages on the East London Line. They expect to complete the upgrade by the end of March.

* There were calls for compensation for Southern passengers but in reality that was above the pay grade of anybody present. I was unable to get a straight answer about whether Southern were receiving compensation from Network Rail for the mess they have made to the signaling system.

When I was waiting around for some sort of announcement at LB the other day, I happened to stand next to a puddle of friendly but confused looking drivers, all ready-to-go but not having been given any instructions at all.

Two minutes later came this announcement: "We are sorry to announce that the xxx to xxx is now cancelled due to a lack of drivers." Crying

When I finally got onto a train and it actually left the station, the driver at least had kept his sense of humor "Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It should have been a good morning, as this is the delayed 10.xx am to Caterham, and we're only running nearly three hours late now, but I can reliably inform you that we are now stopping at New Cross Gate, Brockley, Forest Hill, Mars, Venus, Uranus, and then all stations to Caterham."

Sadly, he only got to NXG where we were then all told to change to the OG as it was now a fast to Caterham service.

Have I missed something - could someone explain what this means? Is it that from 2017 onwards Southern will no longer stop any "late night" services at Forest Hill? If so, what qualifies as "late night"?

2017: Overground will run through the whole night on Friday and Saturday, but only as far south as New Cross Gate.
I had requested that they run to Crystal Palace until 1am or 2am on these evenings.

Oh right - well that is something worth campaigning for - even if it were just one or two trains per hour going south of NXG then that would be better than none. Once again with the new "24 hr tube" TFL seems to be totally prioritising N Londoners over S Londoners. I just don't understand why we continue to be discriminated against?!

So, michael, in summary Network Rail say everything is fine and we shouldn't be worrying our pretty little heads about it?

Re late night Overground - I would love to see it run to Crystal Palace. Getting as far as New Cross gate isn't a challenge late at night. Getting further south is. Keep up the pressure!

I can always get a N171 home from New Cross Gate.

We can raise this with the candidates for Mayor of London. I think the election for them will be May 2016.

Michael, thank you for the summary.

Fotunately I mostly commute by cycle. My main area of concern is the proposed late night running. Did they give any reason for curtailing the service at NXG? Is it planned to go all the way north to Highbury & Islington? South London should not be 2nd class. Getting to NXG is no better than changing night buses at Elephant & Castle.

Perhaps we should have a south London candidate in the mayoral election? Tongue only partly in cheek.

Thing is even if it wasn't running all the way to H&I it wouldn't matter because people in N London will still have Jubilee, Northern (both branches), Victoria, Piccadilly and Central line to get them home, but people in South London will only have the Northern Line (and the 3 Victoria line stops south of river) which is absolutely no help at all to the million+ people who live in SE London. It would be shameful if that populous was simply refused late night services while the rest of London benefited from them.

I'm sure the reason for stopping at New Cross Gate is a matter of line ownership. Network Rail expect to take possession of the tracks every night at 2am for any possible routine/emergency maintenance work (they do allow hourly services on some routes to airports etc)

Theoretically all of the ELL is owned by Network Rail, but more so south of NXG.

But over the next two years the Forest Hill Society intend to keep up the pressure for ELL services south of NXG on Friday and Saturday in particular. See the article in our newsletter when it comes out in the next couple of weeks.
