Thanks for that.
That's pretty low impact then as after the 8:20 the LB trains are progressively less busy and seating "shouldn't" be a problem...

The issue is that the LB trains are currently not turning up.

The 08.31 is a lovely train - long, usually one of the brand new ones, and yes, pretty empty. Which means all the people on the later stations can get on too - it's not just us that are going to suffer from the loss of that one, but those in Brockley and New Cross Gate, who sometimes struggle to get on the 8.21 (which I think comes from Victoria and is thus pretty busy even at FH).

It's also the last train I can take and still get to work on time. Guess I'm going to have to get out of bed a bit earlier from the new year...

So big gap at HOP between the 8:21 and the 08:42 to Lon Bridge? Not great.... To be honest if you are looking to get an earlier train I'd go for before 8am, or (if your employee is flexible, go later, 9am). 8am to 8:45am is getting insufferable whether its BR or Overground.

And once they get the 5 car trains on Overground, but only the first four can open the doors at Canada Water.........

Yes big gap between 08:21 and 08:42 (although these are the times at FH, HOP is two minutes later). And the Overground trains between these times are likely to get incredibly busy.

I understand that Canada Water platforms have been extended so that all doors will open on the 5 carriage trains as they are phased in.

I have no doubt that commuting at peak times is going to be hard work from Forest Hill, but it could be a lot worse. Personally I always arrive at work at 8am to avoid the crush (a habit I got into when trains were much more overcrowded before 2004, before that I would often find myself in the luggage car of a slam door train with 20-30 other people). And I'm looking forward to next year when I will switch from Southern to Overground and get to work five minutes quicker at no additional cost. I'm sure I'll get bored with standing all the way every day, but at least it will be on bright, air-conditioned trains.

Southern have published the list of changes to the January 2015 timetable and it corresponds with this information I provided above.
More details at: http://www.southernrailway.com/southern/...uary-2015/

Some of the other Southern services will be longer (8 carriages going up to 10 carriages)

I have been corrected about the door opening of 5 carriage trains. At Canada Water one of the new sets of doors (in the rear carriage) will not open, but the other set of doors in the carriage will open.

For those changing at Whitechapel both sets of the doors in the rear carriage will not open, but you can move between carriages (if there is space to move!)

It could have been worse, and it is possible that if the Forest Hill Society had not been raising concerns every few months for the last two years, we might have lost more trains or not got more carriages.

"At least it will be on bright, air-conditioned trains". You're joking, right? At least half the time the Overground has no aircon I can tell and is headache-inducingly stuffy. Just give us windows that open, please!

The air con on the Overground trains fail when the train is crowded, so the air can't circulate.

My impression with the Overground is that the aircon seems to nearly always be home on the way home if it is warm, but is hardly ever on in the mornings if it is warm. It certainly does not seem to come on based on the temperature inside the carriages.

Great info Michael thanks.

Also re: Overground air-conditioning it really doesn't factor in humidity. And in the morning I think the problem is like a car, the air conditioning only fully comes on when the engine is under load. So when it sits at Crystal Palace and runs to Brockley, because the stations are so close and it's been sitting at Crystal Palace, the engine rarely gets going. After New Cross Gate it starts to come on. But by then it's too late and you get off anyway.

On the way home it's usually Ok because it's been running since Highbury.

The Thameslink Programme has announced ticketing changes for Southern Season holders and Oyster PAYG/Contactless card users from January.

Season ticket holders and Oyster PAYG/Contactless users will be allowed to use the tube between London Bridge and Elephant & Castle, Waterloo, Southwark (for Waterloo East), Embankment and Charing Cross. Also Cannon Street to Embankment and Charing Cross without extra charge.

Tickets will also be valid on Route 381 from London Bridge to Waterloo and Route 15 from Cannon Street to Charing Cross.

You'll also be allowed to interchange between Southwark and Waterloo East at no extra charge.

Hmm, how about using my train-only season ticket on the buses to get me from Stondon Park to Ladywell station for a Charing X train? I think that should be allowed as it's in the 'any reasonable route' category, but will the buses accept it?

I've just moved to a new place between Peckham Rye station and HOP. If I'm heading to London Bridge I have the option of a bus to PR or a walk to HOP.

Today was my first journey from HOP at rush hour (0753). I was kind of hoping for one of those luxurious new 10 carriage trains to whisk me in comfort to my destination.

Does anyone know when the new style trains come through HOP on their way to LB?

I'd stick to HOP as some peak London Bridge services are currently terminating at South Bermondsey from Peckham Rye and London Overground services aren't as regular.

Hi Randall. I get trains at FH, and yes, the 7.50 is usually old stylee. If you can hang on for the next one (about 8 mins later I think) that's usually both new and empty-ish. The one before (7.42 from FH) is also nice. I don't think it's necessarily a hard and fast rule, but the ones at 20 and 50 mins from FH are usually the cattle trucks. Of course, given that they rarely run on time you can turn up for a nice one and the next to arrive will be not-nice....

Thanks very much. I'm going to give those a go.

Next will be to get on nodding terms with my fellow commuters as people tend to have a favourite carriage/seat and travel at the same time each morning.

Hi Randall,

How refreshing to hear you want to get on nodding terms with your fellow passengers, I hope it catches on! A smile across a carriage, a knowing nod or shrug can make a journey seem far more pleasant, it makes you feel that we are all in it together.

Best of luck with the new journey.

On which note... I went to Finches Ski Emporium last Sunday (not yesterday) for their Sunday opening celebration (my friends' band was playing) and I spotted someone across the shop I recognised. We exchanged broad smiles, but I couldn't place where I knew her from, and I suddenly thought - argh, maybe that's a famous person, and I've just smiled thinking I know her, and I don't, and that's weird... So I stopped.

And then two minutes later I realised I know her from the 7.42, where we vie on the platform for first entry through the same train door. Next time I catch that train I'm actually going to say hello!
