Its good to hear it all went smoothly rbmartin. I enjoyed the trip too but it wasn't quite as smooth as yours, I waited 10 mins at Dalston for a train, there were two on the platforms, the one I was on had visual info saying it was going to Crystal Palace while the audo announced the first train to leave would go to West Croydon. The platforms did not have any visible numbering on them so it caused confusion for the people on the train who had already waited up to 10 mins. Despite that little inconvenience the trains ran smoothly, they seem very spacious and cool inside, and it seemed amazing to get to that side of town so quick, infact I think it will be quicket to get to Southwarks swimming pool at surrey Quays ( 14 mins ) than it will be to get to any Lewisham pool, shame on you Steve Bullock.

Sorry to hear of your experience at Dalston Junction, you'd think that at the terminus they'd have the technology sorted to make sure you get on the right train at least?

There are still some niggles with the system, at FH, the departure board, nor the pre-recorded station announcements mention Surrey Quays. At NXG, there's no electronic display unit telling you when the next train southbound is, although there is an old yellow one showing Southern services from platform 2.

Still the big test is tomorrow when I do my first commute into town.

I caught the new LO train from Forest Hill to New Cross Gate at 11am. My carriage had a film crew and the Managing Director of London Overground. I spoke with him for few minutes about the inadequacy of the new LO timetable booklet for our line.

My criticism was that at 24 pages long, it still did not have space to cover the times between Dalston and Surrey Quays. That useful times for interchange stations at Canada Waters and Whitechapel were missing. He was in agreement with me as he had seen the booklets for the first time this week. He thought that the Comms Dept had made it too simple and he would ensure that the next release would be better.

He was pleased that the carriages were full and people were looking happy. Well, he could continue that feeling by offering free travelcards everyday.

Of course you could go to the 50m swimming pool at the national sports centre in Crystal Palace too, which might be closer - but I agree about Lewisham's pools. Not just getting to them, but the unwillingness of staff to answer the phone and lack of information on the website. I could go on and on..[/quote]

I think using public transport the surrey quays one will be the quickest, but thanks for the suggestion

actually thinking about your suggestion maybe crystal palace poolbecomes more accessible, I think the surrey quays station is nearer to the pool than crystal palce but it might be worth a try.

The pool at Surrey Quays is across the road from Canada Water tube.

No worries, Canada Water, Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays are so close together.

You can see the end of Rotherhithe station from Canada Water!

The first morning commute to Docklands on the ELL went well. 7:36 from HoP, got the second train on the Jubilee to Canary Wharf, at my desk in Canary Wharf at 8:10. 35 minutes door to desk and not touching zone 1. Though I suspect much later from HOP would mean a long wait at Canada Water!

And 6 trains an hour on a Sunday (!) from Hop to Penge is very good for the tennis/squash club at Sydenham.......

Much improved journey to work this morning, I work near temple station and changed at Whitechapel. Shaved about 10 minutes off my journey and seems much easier.

I've been riding my cycle to work in Marylebone since the beginning of 2008. I used the service today to check it out. It is so good I might ditch the bike and get back on the trains!

I found it slightly surreal to step foot onto the Overground train at Forest Hill and then 14 minutes later be stepping out into the cavernous subterranean world of the Underground at Canada Water.

Wow! How short is that walk from the Overground to the Jube Tube!

I sat there musing as we pulled into London Bridge and then the thought blossomed in my mind, "I might never have to use the London Bridge National Rail station ever again." And I smiled.

I was stuck on a ELL train for 15 mins on the way home tonight, but at least the air con worked properly!

Hrm. I was stuck for ages on a very slow train from Shadwell at around 6:00 where the air con was not working...... we waited outside of NXG for around 10 minutes getting hotter and hotter....only a few of the windows seemed to open.....2/10 for the first day.

Talk about teething problems!

I was also stuck on a ELL train from Shadwell (it left at about 1810) without any aircon (and none of the windows open!). They are nice trains but I did have a thought of "cattle-truck" as I was standing for 25 odd minutes in an oven! (Minimal seating afterall).

Also, apparently there was a fire at West Croydon so traindrivers heading south didn't know where they'd ultimately end up (ie at Crystal Palace or Norwood). The boards at Shadwell didn't have any displays so after waiting 5 minutes a New Cross train pulled up and then it took another 10 mins for the NXG train to arrive.

Early days yet but I'm not convinced it will save time or hassle swapping from London Bridge (I work at Fenchurch St).

Does anyone know why does the air con seem to stop when the trains stop ( according to these reports ). My journeys on the ell have been very cool but it seems worrying that as soon as there is a problem people talk about no windows aopening and no air con

Question - now that we're an Overground station, are there still the same rules in effect for PAYG Oyster cards? I have a zone 1-2 and previously to come back to Forest Hill, I had to get an extension loaded on. Does anyone knows if that still applies or does it now work like normal 'Tube' stations where you can just touch out?

The OEP is only needed if you're travelling to NR only stations. So for example, two Zone 5 stations, East Croydon (Southern) you'd need the OEP and West Croydon (part of the Overground network) no.

All stations from NXG to Crystal Palace/West Croydon are now charged at the TfL rate for Tube, DLR and Overground which doesn't require the National Rail OEP.

Today I traveled from HOP to Mortlake, going HOP to LB Waterloo East, Waterloo to Mortlake. On the return I went Richmond to Waterloo, Jubilee line to Canada Water then Ell. Will I have been charged more than if I had returned by the same route on Oyster PAYG? Also If I had travelled and returned the same routes would the Ell have cost the same as the overground route? Help. thanks
