Cranston isn't the issue, Cranston Road traffic now has complete priority (apart from if they want to turn right) when the lights go green, only when there is no traffic left coming that way can cars turn right from Brockley Rise onto Stanstead Road, and more often than not only 2 or 3 cars make it. The phasing has caused terrible tailbacks sometimes tailing all the way back to Stondon Park. As OakR mentioned, rat running is now by far the quickest way to get across that crossing if you're coming from Brockley Rise.

Don't give up Baboonery, where would all the great people of history have got to if they'd just given up?

Brockley Rise is a designated B road that has mostly commercial premises until you get past the adult education centre.

Cranston Road is a residential road that is unclassified.

Personal preferences aside I know where I'd rather see the tailbacks.

Well this was an accident just waiting to happen. I have just witnessed an accident in this junction. A car turning right from Brockley rise, not noticing car driving straight up from cranston Rd towards Brockley rise. Both cars damaged, no one hurt thank goodness. As a local resident i knew something like this would happen after they changed that filter. Does anyone know why it was changed in the first place?

TfL have got back to me re this....

Dear Mr Snasdell

Thank you once again for recently contacting us with regards to traffic light phasing at the junction of Stanstead Road/Cranston Road/Brockley Rise, and for your continued patience while we investigated this matter.

I can confirm that the change in staging at this junction is intentional, and this change has been made to run traffic movements simultaneously to increase the capacity at this busy junction and to increase the efficiency. The change at this location has been made as part of our review programme. This review is in progress and once complete the operation used to control this section of the network will provide a better balance for all users.

Please be assured that signal priority changed boards have been installed to bring the change to drivers’ attention.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. I do hope that the above information is helpful to you. Please contact me again if you need any further assistance, or if you would prefer to talk to us about this matter, please call us on 0343 222 1234.

Kind regards

Thanks Snazy.
Interesting that their reply only talks about the impact on traffic with no mention of the impact upon pedestrians. or is that for a different Department to consider? The new phasing makes BR a nightmare to cross.

Bringouttheecranston - yes Brockley Rise does have many commercial premises but also two schools, one of which has it's playground right next to the road....

Quite happy to raise any concern with them that people may have. Info on minor accidents, near misses, light jumps etc .. All things their stats will miss out on.
Last night alone I watch 3 cars all roll through a very RED light to turn right from Brockley Rise.

There is no perfect solution, one quiet road means others are busier. Problem I see is there are no effective alternatives coming from Brockley Rise to turn west on the South Circ, other than rat runs. Given the volume of the traffic in the evenings, I can see a LOT more rat running going on around the back and coming out on Wastdale Rd.

Given the complexities of this alternative there is far larger scope for accidents, and aggressive driving. Time will tell.

Sorry Jane, I meant to say, the impact on pedestrians should also be considered in their decision making, but its hard to gauge, hence I say about giving feedback to them.

Isn't it possible to use Brockley park / Montem road to avoid the junction? Probably easier than the Wastdale road route which I always find a little too torturous to be really useful.

If they got rid of the bus lane going South on Brockley rise it would allow more traffic to go straight on or turn left rather than waiting in a queue of traffic waiting to turn right, relieving some of the congestion on Brockley Rise. The right hand lane would be right turn only going west on Stanstead and could be phased green for another 15-20 seconds or so.

Erekose, it depends which way you are turning really. For a right turn the wastdale way makes sense as you can turn from just after Stondon Park and get into the maze from there.
That said, on passing this evening the lights are back to a 3 phase setting, but with just seconds on the Brockley Rise sequence.

Well I just went down Brockley Rise to go straight over to Cranston, and it appears the lights are back to normal. By normal I mean green light on Brockley rise means cars can go forward, left or right with traffic from all other roads stopped. Light goes to Red on Brockley Rise and cars go on Cranston. No traffic on either side though maybe that's due to Friday night. Either way I hope it stays that way.

Well on Saturday morning the traffic on Cranston is backed up about 2/3 of the way from the junction to Loxton Road.

So I have to disagree and hope that it doesn't stay this way.

I believe the phases are set to change depending on traffic flow and time of day etc, so sometimes its a 3 phase, sometimes its a 2 phase.
It was far from perfect before, but the experimental phase they are in now is a right pain.

BringOutTheCranston, that certainly does not sound good - I wonder if it is as Snazy side a different sequence. Hopefully they will find the right formula.

Traffic from Cranston had been on a sensor for a couple of months beforehand - if there was nothing there it'd skip that phase at night.

Very occasionally coming out of Cranston Rd would get stuck on red - in 10 or so years I've had to inch through on red 2 or 3 times because the lights weren't changing.

The latest from TfL on the junction.
I have raised the matter of the near misses and the signage issues.

This is the response I usually get from them - often followed by silence.

@Snazzy

That's just a meaningless stock answer sent by some poor cog in the public relations machine. You can guarantee that they won't be looking into it.

Do you get the impression that there is someone in a room with a big screen of all the junctions in London pressing a series of buttons and watching the traffic flow, without ever leaving to look at the junctions that they are controlling?
