Stanstead Road / Brockley Rise junction lights.

Has anyone else noticed the change of the phasing, now allowing traffic to flow from Brockley Rise and Cranston Road at the same time. Causing big delays at rush hour for Brockley Rise traffic.

Tweeted tfl to confirm it was intentional, but still waiting on confirmation.

I think the signals were broken a couple of days ago, lots of people ending up going through the red light (myself included). I hope that was not the signal change but pretty sure not as they were red for an eternity and continuous green on the 205.

Maybe they did something when they came to resolve that issue. On Wed evening and Thurs morning it was definitely doing just 2 simple green light phases. One for the 205 and one for the opposite.
I'm housebound at the moment so can't check today, but really think that if the change IS intentional, they should have signs warning of it, or it has the potential to be very nasty.

It's a bad enough accident hot spot when everyone knows what's going on, but start changing priorities for opposing traffic flows, and you are asking for trouble.

Didn't know about that Paul, what day was that?

Did notice the traffic backing up past Stondon Park since its happened though.

Jenros, me too and an email, nothing back since their original reply saying they were sending someone.
Jollyrog, that would make sense why they merged a sequence, but dumb not to warn motorists of the changes. Still not been back down there to check since Thurs morning.

I wrote/spoke to TfL several times about those lights. There wasn't a phase that allowed pedestrians to cross Brockley Rise in one go, which I thought was dangerous, especially considering the proximity of Dalmain School. There was effectively no pedestrian provision to cross Brockley Rise.

The only way to achieve this would have been to merge a phase.

TfL said that they'd examined it but wouldn't make a change as the A205 traffic flow was deemed more important.

Strange, yet they seem to have done precisely that.
If that is what they have done, I just think it's dangerous and stupid to have done so without warning approaching motorists. In light traffic, cars coming down Brockley Rise and turning right will assume it's a clear phase and turn in the path of cars coming from Cranston..

Just have to wait and see I guess.

Snazy - witnessed a near miss of just this sort on Saturday. Lots of horns. I think this might pan out as a positive change, but would a couple of 'changed priorities ahead' boards have killed TfL?

The traffic was backed up unusually far down Cranston Road a couple of mornings last week, which may have been related to the introduction of this, but it seems to have eased again since then.

I was at the pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Brockley Rise today and it seemed even worse to me. With this new phasing I could not see any point when it was totally safe to cross the Brockley Rise crossing. Maybe there was a small window in the phasing, but it was not obvious to me (we were there a while!) and without having superhuman powers of being able to view all the traffic lights myself, as a pedestrian you have no way of knowing whether traffic is going to stop or not. London drivers tend to only slow down for lights at the last minute.

I had three children with me and it was a little hairy to say the least, perched on a tiny pedestrian island, lorries and buses going past, trying to find a suitable gap in traffic when we could dash across, and relying on car drivers indicating which way they were turning (which from my experience as a driver round here i know they are not good at.....).

As a pedestrian that crossing has always been difficult, and now it is even worse.

Looks like the new phasing is here to stay. Not the best thought out. 8pm on a Sunday night and a huge queue up Brockley Rise, phase letting 3 cars at a time out.

Really needs some re-thought. I'm sure that the actual south Circ is probably benefitting from it, but the side roads and rat run residents are suffering for it.

I notice a CHANGED PRIORITIES AHEAD sign has appeared on a post near the corner of the Jenner's car park. By which time it's probably a bit late. Another concerto for horn and brakes as I passed last night.

Depends which side you're on. With more time for northbound drivers I get the impression (and it's only an impression) that the traffic doesn't back up Cranston Road quite so much.

Although that probably means that it backs back up Brockley Rise instead as there is less time to turn right.

The 'Changed Priorities Ahead' signs are particularly flimsy and have been attached to posts with plastic ties. And so the local scallywags can spin them around. I've already turned the one of the Cranston Road side back the right way around.[/quote]

Yup I appreciate that traffic in Cranston will have benefitted no end from it. But from what I see from the knock on effect, rather than a simple transfer from one side to the other, the impact on BR is terrible. But I guess with one less phase stopping the south circular, all is well.

As for the signs, I hadn't seen them arrive but agree way too late.

If I see a queue I now rat run. I waited in traffic for about 3 light changes the other day and gave up (I had 15 mins to get to B&Q before it closed). Went up the back streets, came out on S circular back up and turned left onto Cranston and bus near the front of the queue had still not gone through.

I can't believe it could not stay green for another 30 seconds or so.

Always seems fine coming back down Cranston road.

Going by the unscientific dataset of what I see out of my front window, traffic on Cranston definitely seems quieter, after the original rush in the first days after the change.
