Did anyone else see the ISS whiz overhead from West to East last night. I live in HOP and saw it go across the sky from One Tree Hill Direction towards Stanstead Road. If you want to try and catch it in the next few days see below:

Fantastic to watch isn't it! I like watching it when I remember. Next up, telescope and long exposure Smile

Just installed an app on my phone ISS Detector recommended on another forum. It is meant to notify you when it is approaching, will see how it works.

Hopefully we'll have nice clear sky again by the time it comes by...

I've wasted great swathes of time watching and photographing the ISS from Forest Hill. Here's a short video I made of it when it came over on 14 April.

Thanks - it was just an ordinary Canon DSLR attached to the back end of my telescope. I tracked the ISS through the finder-scope, pushing the scope by hand to keep the ISS as close to the cross-hairs as possible while the camera fired away for about three minutes. This was from my Forest Hill back garden - here seen with cat.

Thanks Paul, I was looking at the Celestrons in Curry's the other day funnily enough. Would love to get some images like this.

How does it perform on the moon etc? Thanks for sharing Smile

I have a Celstron and have added a Barlow lens for magnification and a moon filter. Works pretty well!

My C8 is great for observing the moon and planets, even under London's light pollution. Under a really dark sky it's a superb all-rounder and quite a manageable size.

That is amazing! From my back window all we saw was a dot speeding across the sky.

Here's a shot of what the moon looked like through the C8 last night.

You can indeed get much more detailed views - this photo needed a focal reducer to make the whole moon fit in the field of view. Normally you can only see a little part of the moon, but the detail you can see at the eyepiece is breathtaking. Mountain peaks and their shadows, jagged-edged craters, ripples in the lava and so forth. No klangers yet though.

This is worth having a look at, if you're buying your first telescope.

http://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/yourfirstscope

What it says is true: the most important thing is the mount (tripod) you put it on. Don't spend huge amounts of money on a great telescope if you're not getting a mount that will keep it rock steady.

Anyone here in the Flamsteed Astronomy Society? http://flamsteed.info/about-us/

And this advice on buying telescopes, choosing between 'goto' or 'not goto' etc looks helpful, too.
