No, not "road maps". GOAD MAPS! Charles Goad produced fire insurance maps for cities around the world, especially London. Risk of fire was ever present in Victorian London- all those coal fires in every building!
These maps were far more detailed than Ordnance Survey maps with a scale of 40ft/inch. They would indicate what activity took place on the premises and the materials the building was made of, eg concrete, brick, timber, steel etc They are wonderful works of art. Do a google image search and you will see some examples.
Goad were making these fire insurance maps up until the 1970s, since when they have specialised in drawing up maps for shopping centres.
The British Library has an extensive collection of them but you have to consult there index book to see which areas are covered. They did produce them for areas outside central London but coverage was more sporadic.
Anyway I was wondering if any one knows if they exist for Forest Hill- Perry Vale in particular.
Thanks
Paul
