Members and non-members are invited to join the second Forest Hill Society pub crawl on Sunday 23rd September.

The current plan is to start at the Capitol 7:30pm where we hope to have a tour of the features that make this building grade 2 listed, including the upstairs of this old cinema.

Forest Hill Hotel 8:30pm
A little known pub close to the heart of Forest Hill

The Honor Oak (or St Germain's as some of us remember it) 9:20pm
One of the latest additions to the pub scene in Forest Hill

Blythe Hill Tavern - 10:10pm
One of the best pubs in the area according to BaggyDave and many other discerning drinkers.

Please join us at as many or as few venues as you wish. But the more the merrier - quite literally in this context!

Sunday is a funny day for a pub crawl. Could make monday a bit tricky. I was in the Forest Hill Hotel last night for the jam night. The music was kicking. Very good indeed.

But Friday and Saturday nights are already very busy in these pubs so it's difficult to accommodate a large influx of people.

Didn't the jam night make Wednesday a bit tricky?

I live across the street from the Hotel - I have to agree that Tuesday nights are excellent, even listening through my bedroom window as I'm falling asleep.

A warning to those planning to attend, his Baggyness may be in attendance, particularly for the long awaited showdown between the new Blythe Hill Tavern and the Old Blythe Hill Tavern (have a look at a map and you will see what I mean). Hope the ghost tour at the capitol is going ahead, see a previous thread on this subject.

A Forest Hill week;

Sunday- a funny day
Monday- a bit tricky
Tuesday excellent especially at night.
Wednesday- tricky and also challenging.
Friday - already very busy
Saturday- already very busy as well

No ones mentioned Thursday, so I will. All future pub crawls cleary ought to take place on a Thursday. There, I've decided.

I think we should take inspiration from Craig David instead.

He's is a popular music singer. Taken from his song '7 days':

I met this girl on Monday
took her for a drink on Tuesday
we were making love by Wednesday
and on Thursday & Friday & Saturday we chilled on Sunday

I always found the lyrics quite silly-amusing and was reminded of them.

How rude PVP

So how many of you are coming on this pub crawl? It seems to be just people saying they can't make it. Of course BD was responsible for the first proper SE23 crawl as older posters will know. Will any of the great unwashed such as Voldemort turn up?

Hopefully I'll be able to attend. How do I know who to approach - should I bring along a copy of the Financial Times or a red carnation?

I hope to make it, not 100% sure. Being new to the area and not knowing any of the posters here by sight, I'm also looking for some sort of red carnation type hint.

Hi hope to join on Sunday - mind u I hate gastro pubs, music, slot
machines, fizzy cold beer and crowds of teenagers (teacher here!). How
do I know who to say hi to? Or do I just try to chat up everyone there?

There is a picture of me on http://foresthillsociety.blogspot.com/20...port.html, so look out for a balding bloke with glasses and a little beard. Rob will be there and has more of a beard http://static.flickr.com/108/315546197_5b6dd4ec3b.jpg . Steve Grindlay may be present, with his beard (http://www.flickr.com/photos/robwinton/402218305/), but others present will not have beards - it is not compulsory.

If the photos don't help I will also try to bring along some large FH Society logos (trees) and place them on the tables as we move from pub to pub.

Is this actually a front to recruit people into CAMRA? Far too many beards going on.

I'll have you know that my beard rarely touches the product of the brewing process. Some of us bearded folk are inclined to the fermented delights of grapes instead, and possibly partial to the results of distillation from time to time.

The thing about many stereotypes is that there is some truth in them. As is seen at the Great British Beer Fest. In my days in agriculture the all the senior management at the Defra Lab has beards as did all members of staff in the Bee Unit (yes it exisits). Similarly, in a previous life I was a trade union rep, there were only about five of us out of around 1000 at conference who did not have beards. I even did a summer special newsletter featuring beards and sandals. For Sunday, I suggest those of you who don't have beards and can't grow one in time, wear their sandals for ease of ID. The best beard in the locality is the quizmaster at the CPT http://www.cptquiz.co.uk/ You may recall him from his days in ELO. Who similarly all had beards.

Slightly off topic but its the name of the game these days and yes lets talk about the Beards and the Bees now you've brought it up; I did see the Bee Unit on the telly not long ago - think it might have been Countryfile, the programme probably watched by more urbanites than any other.

Bearded Ones take note- the '10 Years Younger' programme last year took 18 yes 18 years off a guy with a beard by removing the beard.

Adrian, please rest assured there's not a teenager left amongst us so you're safe...

Adrian,
Some photos of us are linked from my previous posting and I have printed some FH Society logos to place on tables. But don't let this stop you chatting up people at other tables.

Most of the pubs we are visiting are not the trendiest (although the Honor Oak is a little trendy), Capitol has no music, some of them have no slot machines. Rob will be able to advise on drinking wine rather than fizzy cold beer, and BaggyDave may be able to recommend a warm beer, I am happy to recommend whiskies, and my wife can provide cocktail recommendations for the Honor Oak. Crowds of teenagers on a Sunday night seems unlikely.

Looking forward to seeing people tomorrow 7:30pm.

Actually, I don't have a beard; I'm just too lazy to shave. Years ago I calculated how many days of my life would I would spend shaving, and decided not to bother. I was rather pleased when someone devised the term "designer stubble". For a brief period my grizzled appearance was actually fashionable.

At the GB Beer Festival this year I wondered why there were so few impressive beards and such a lack of large paunches in 'Ollie Reed - Missing In Action' t-shirts. Then I realised there was a special members' area upstairs that we casual punters weren't allowed in.

I should turn up tonight - if you see a lost clueless bloke with fair hair and glasses in a green t-shirt that will be me.

BD was otherwise disposed but did send at least one spy (waiting for a report, once the code for safety has been issued). Did it go ahead? Were there any ghosts in the Capitol. Did the FHH turn out to be a gem. And which pub won the battle of the two Blythe Hills?

It most certainly did. The ghost of Baggydave was nowhere to be seen unfortunately, although some might say they felt his "presence". We did get a great tour of the Capitol (although don't try it if you are allergic to dust) and I am planning on going back with my camera.

Great food on offer at both the Honor Oak and the BHT, just when they were required. The FHH is a place with lots of potential and not a lot of custom. Shame really, but there ought to be a better compromise between "traditional pub" and "somewhere you want to drink". Don't mean to be too nasty as the manager was nice, but i do wonder about that place.

I wonder why more people could not make it. Was it because of the day of the week(end), or the company? Maybe it was simply the abundance of facial hair, which, it turns out, was not as plentiful as one had been lead to expect.

I though a turn out of over just under 20 people was pretty good going for a Sunday evening. However, I might have been seeing double towards the end. It was a good atmosphere and I was really pleased we were able to have the ghost tour for that paranormal dimension, although we did get a bit split up because of it.

For the next pub crawl I think we should take Craig David's advice and try a Tuesday evening so as not to clash with peoples' chilling time on Sunday.

I did think I saw Baggydave at one point but it turned out to be a pickled egg.

'over just under 20 people'? Yup, sounds like an accounting error there Wink

I hate to say it, but those pickled eggs were far scarier than the ghosts in the Capitol. Eech.

The best pickled egg was at the Honor Oak and the best beer was the Westerham Summer Something at the BHT.
