I think they might pick long weekends to do engineering works because there's fewer commuters than on a weekday. If more than two days is needed for a big project, or work cannot be left half done between weekends, or it means one weekend is disrupted rather than two, it might be the most sensible option.

I'm grateful they avoid doing it during the week and that the workers give up their long weekends to keep public transport improvements... on track.
