Hello all,

Was wondering what places make for good day trips from where we are all based. Obviously there are some good haunts on our doorstep (Crystal Palace, Dulwich, Brockwell Park, Greenwich) but have you found any good spots further afield?

We've found a few great ones (a lovely nature reserve on the edge of the M25 by Chislehurst, Red House, Eltham Palace, the river walk from Deptford to Beckenham) but figured you all most now some gems too.

Anything from food markets, pockets of restaurants, woods, galleries, walks etc would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

How far do you want to travel in terms of time/miles? Are you taking public transport, or a car?

Pretty happy for it to be either as we use both equally.

Thought the topic could be useful for newcomers to the area so don't be shy!

Thanks

There are a few suggestions on a previous thread that may be of interest:

Chislehurst Caves are quite interesting for all age groups.

Nor do you say if you have kids...

I've found it worthwhile gettig an English Heritage annual pass, which gives free access to many historic sites within easy range (nearest being Eltham Palace). Then we got a Historic Royal Palaces pass, which gives access to the Tower of London, Hampton Court, and Kensington Palace, among others. We will probably get National Trust membership next.

If used wisely, these passes can save lots of money over a year (though make sure you do use them, or it's a false economy) and give you lots of good ideas for inexpensive days out.

We don't have any just yet but will do in 3 months time!

Thanks for the suggestions. Word of warning about National Trust membership, we got it when in Scotland but are finding there's a lot less sites down here to visit. Worth checking on their site how worthwhile it would be for you...

Thanks!

Found a nice walk near Croydon last weekend; Selsedon Woods. Very quiet, five open meadows and lots of peaceful woodland to explore. Well worth a Sunday drive.

Thanks to whomever suggested Godstone Farm, we tried it out last weekend - my wee lad had a great time as did the rest of the family.

I cobbled together this list from the various posts, bit of a TL:DR I guess..

- Petts Wood
- Keston Ponds
- Eltham Palace
- Chartwell House, Rochester Castle and the superb National Fruit collection at Brogdale which also has a miniature railway.
- Godstone Farm
- The Pinetum at Bedgebury - fantastic walking or hire a bike with the kids
- Bluebell Railway
- Knowle Park in Sevenoaks
- Ightham Mote nearby
- The Bluebell and Kent & East Sussex Railways
- Sheffield Park - handily close to the Bluebell Railway
- Bedgebury
- Camber Sands, Winchelsea, Rye and Hastings
- Box Hill
- RHS gardens at Wisley

Here's three more for you to try in Kent.

Emmetts Garden, Bow Beech Reservoir & Penshurst Place.

Emmetts Garden and Bow Beech Reservoir are close to each other, near Ide Hill, Kent. (Off the A25)

If you just fancy a drive out in the car, then there's a causeway at one end of Bow Beech Reservoir where you can park the car, lean on a fence and look right out across the reservoir - there's usually lots of wildfowl flying in and out to see. Can be very tranquil at dusk when the sun is setting. A real gem when the weather is nice.

Penshurst Place is a bit further on from Sevenoaks.
