Just a note to warn residents in the area that we had a burglary recently. They came in through the back door (they climbed over the back fence) and ransacked the place - they were very thorough and went through all the cupboards, drawers, side tables and under the bed. They targeted easily portable items such as cash, jewellery, computers and cameras.

If you do not have a home alarm installed, given the recent spate of theft in the area, it my be an idea to get one. In the interim, make sure your security lights (if any) in your back yard are in working order, and ensure you leave some lights on, a radio or television when you leave your house for the day. The insurers also suggested storing valuables in the least obvious places - everyone stores valuable items in the same places - under the bed, in their underwear drawers and even in the freezer - thieves know to look there. The other option is to have a home safe which is bolted to the floor or somewhere equally secure, or hide your valuable things in the loft if you are away on holidays for a period of time.

The local police mentioned that there have been a series of burglaries in the area. They tend to favour end of terrace houses and in order to determine whether you are home or not, knock on the door to see if anyone answers. This was a bit of a worry for me as I have a young baby and often don't answer the door when I have my nap with the little one.

that's horrible, especially with a young baby. Sorry to hear that. We live near you and are second to end terrace. We have an alarm which we always put on. I do feel quite safe in this area but this just goes to show...

hope you get everything sorted out soon.

We also had an intruder at our back door. He put his hand in through the window, while we were in bed. It was about 11 ish. My girlfriend screamed and he scarpered.
