Some friends are trying to arrange their registry office wedding locally either in Lewisham or Southwark but find the prices for the reception extortionate. It appears that the very mention of the word' wedding' triples the cost from the outset. Does anyone know of or has experience of local pubs or other venues ie restaurants that do something reasonable for a reception and that can come recommended. They would even hire a hall an get some caterers in however many church halls dont allow alcohol at all so thats limiting the range. They would like something reasonably classy but without the price tag that necessarily comes with it. They would consider something alternative or unusual if they could find it. Its probably going to be a high summer event so no doubt it will rain! Any advice or information helpful. I've advised them of the Dolphin, the Dartmouth, the Dulwich Woodhouse as these all offer reception catering so if anyone has any personal experience of those it would be helpful. They looked at the barn at the Herne Tavern already but didnt really like it that much. Question Bar wasnt their thing either. Things like the Horniman or Dulwich Art Gallery are just way out of their league.

The Dog in Dulwich is lovely for weddings! Our friends had a very small budget for their day and had the outside garden / patio area - and even when it rained it was sheltered....although I guess that depends on the time of year and tree coverage! It was a really nice venue for a wedding and must have been reasonable as they didn't have much dosh at all.

We had ours in the function room of the Honor Oak when the two Jamies ran it. They did us proud but couldn't vouch for how it'd be now as I think it's changed hands or management or something.

We had a post-Lewisham registry office wedding picnic in the gardens of the Horniman museum. Everyone jumped on the 185 to get there. We had to hope it didn't rain too much, but in the end a sunny day and all went well. Cost £25 for the wedding photo permit for the gardens (note the word wedding in there.. its free to take photos otherwise). Also had a post-picnic booze and speeches at the All Inn One, the back stairs are good for providing a stage and we hired the venue for free. Paid for some food and drinks though.

Albeit now nearly 17 years ago, it was the lack of reception venues that made us give up on getting married locally. We would dearly have liked to get married at St. Augustine's on One Tree Hill, it would have been a beautiful setting, but it was the lack of a reception venue that forced our decision.

We were absolutely horrified at the sum quoted by the Horniman for the use of their conservatory - quite unrealistic and beyond the reach of ordinary mortals. (I suspect they are trying to put people off really.)

As a result, we took our not insubstantial budget elsewhere, which also meant a loss of business to local florists, car hires, cake makers, hairdressers, etc. etc.

Surely someone in FH is missing a trick here?
