I notice that from next year there will be direct flights from City Airport to New York.

Airbus A318 aircraft will be used, configured to take just 32 business class passengers (usual capacity of this aircraft is over 100).

Does anyone know what the noise implications are of this development

The sound of champagne corks popping will become deafening over Docklands.

Given that there are about 20 flights per day to Amsterdam (many of which have less than 30 people on board), some of which are within 5 minutes of each other, I do not think that the odd flight to NY will be a particular problem.

I think City Airport is great, just 20 minutes away by cab, and the ELL extension will make it fairly quick by train (certainly faster than Gatwick or Heathrow).

Hopefully, no plane will crash on landing as one did recently at Heathrow airport.

That will depend if the Prime Minister is in the vicinity (according to The People - http://www.people.co.uk/news/tm_headline..._page.html) no other newspapers are reporting this theory.

Whilst not a lover of some of the older aircraft flying over Forest Hill the Airbus you refer to is exceptionally quite.

Thanks, Londonrz, that was what I wanted to know.

How on earth do you get there in 20 minutes Michael? Do you have your own personal helicopter? Even BD can't do that by pushbike

It takes about 40 mins just to get to the Rotherhithe tunnel in the morning and going via Blackwall or Tower Bridge even longer.

Nice short check-ins though. Assume that it cannot be BAA owned, seeing as they are incapable of running a decent airport.

You can also get executive jet flights to NY from Stansted. Not that I would be interested!

A pushbike cannot use the Blackwall tunnel which is likely to add time to the journey. Google Maps reckons 30 mins to drive, but at 5:30am there is no traffic and travel in a cab is wonderful.

5.30? I assume you mean the afternoon, which suggests that you must be a daily mail reader (they can't handle such modern things at the 24 hour clock, new money etc)

If you mean 05.30, I am rather confused. Surely, apart from people at raves, everyone is asleep at this time of the morning.

Having travelled to Greenwich for starting work at 6pm for many years I reckon it would take about 2 hours at this time to get to City Airport. I used to have to allow about an hour and a quarter to get to Greenwich by car, about 40 mins by Motorbike.Cursing

You might be right that I was mistaken about 5:30am. Looking at the schedule I see that there are no flights before 7am from City. I must have got confused because I would have set my alarm for 5:30am - next time I will ask BD to wake me on the way back from one of his raves.

But I still maintain that the journey takes a very short time by cab early in the morning. Using public transport only takes 42 minutes, and that is without the East London Line.

Raves? BD, do these functions still exist?
