As a Labour supporter I'm pleased ( and extremely surprised if I'm honest) to see we have a Labour councillor back in Forest Hill ward but I am sincerely sorry to lose John Russell as he was a hardworking and highly effective councillor.

I resisted the temptation to make any comments - but having seen Roz' comment would add that I too am very sorry, and surprised, to see John Russell didn't get back in.

For completeness, I will add that Steve Bullock is back as Mayor, and Jim Dowd as MP.

A casualty of alphabetical order perhaps?

Does anyone know where or how the actual votes cast is published? It would be interesting to see if turnout was a bit higher and how close some of these races are.

Lewisham now has 38 Labour, 12 Lib Dem and 1 Green councillor. There is a recount on three councillors seats. If there is an obvious pattern it seems to be that Labour's dominance has been reaaserted, with smaller parties (Socialist Alliance, Greens) being swept aside. I am surprised by this and thought that people might be gettinmg Greener. The Lib Dems campaigned quite hard in my area: yesterday was the first day where I did not trip over several leaflets as I opened my door coming home.

The Greens in Lewisham seem to be doomed... The results for Johnson and Walton were shameful..

Not good that we are stuck with Dowd for another five years.. Good that his partner was booted out good and proper..

Well done to Heidi in Lewisham East..

Why, Piglet, is it good news about his partner losing her seat? Did she also not return your emails?

I understand there were question marks over her expenses and the voters have taken the appropriate action.

Quite rightly so.

I would like to congratulate all the local councillors who have been elected, and to thank John Russell for his hard work on so many issues in Forest Hill over the last four years.

Janet Anderson's dry stone wall
Simon Coyle

June 18, 2009

ROSSENDALE MP Janet Anderson claimed £900 in Parliamentary expenses to rebuild a dry stone wall, it has been revealed.

The claim was among details of Additional Cost Allowances made by Mrs Anderson from April 2004 which were released online this morning.

Between April 2007 to May 2007 Mrs Anderson also claimed £2,700 of tax payers' cash in other expenses but provided no receipts and now says she has "no idea" what it was for.

She claimed for the wall at her home in her Darwen constituency in September 2005 at the same time she claimed £850 to remove and replace a fence, £100 to clear rubbish and tidy the garden and £100 to remove graffiti from her garage wall.

Details of her expenses also include spending £150 to replace a garage door, £250 to lop down trees and replacing garage roof tiles for £350 in March 2007.

And in September 2006 she spent £500 cleaning and painting outside paintwork and £350 replacing a rotten window surround.

But the former Minister for Tourism, Film and Broadcasting defended her claims and maintains she has not broken the rules.

Mrs Anderson said: "Under the second home allowance I can claim for repairs needed to my home.

"The allowances are there to reflect the fact that we have got to live in two places and I have always claimed these on my second home in accordance with the rules.

"The dry stone wall was in my garden and was falling down so had to be repaired. It had to be completely rebuilt because it was falling onto my pavement. I cannot remember what the graffiti said but if it was of a sexual or racial nature it would have been removed by the council."

Details of Mrs Anderson's Incidental Expenses Provision and Staff Allowance were also released and include spending £189 on a dishwasher and £130 installation at her constituency office and £1,250 on her website.

Mrs Anderson added: "I think that absolutely right that these are published so people can see how we spend public money and it is obviously up to them to judge us as part of a democracy."

Mrs Anderson has previously been criticised for her travel expenses and has racked up the biggest mileage claim in Parliament; 41,984 miles at a cost of almost £12,000.

But she defended her high mileage saying it was because she uses her car to drive to and from London.

Lewisham Council election results with turnout etc all available on the usual website, except Grove Park ward - recount.
Out of 54 seats the current scores are Labour 38, LibDem 12 and Green 1 seat, 3 to be declared.
Good luck to all those elected, even the Lib Dem candidate (and now councillor) in Crofton Park ward who couldnt be bothered to turn up to the count at Sedgehill School last night.

I think we all need to rise above Piglets remarks, obviuosly its some sort of personal issue and has nothing to do with politics.

I am a member of the Labour Party ( a genuine one, that is, not a ficticious one for election purposes) nonetheless, I would agree that John Russell was an excellent councillor and having a name that appears near the bottome of the Ballot paper doesn't help.

Dylan

I have been a member of the Labour Party longer than you have been alive so please keep your sarcy comments to yourself.

Roz asked me a question and I replied supplying the evidence. It is important to rely on facts and evidence not fantasy.

What is the definition of an excellent Councillor? Presumably an excellent Councillor would donate their allowance to Charity?

I'd like to thank all the people who voted for me.

TBH, I'm also still rather shell-shocked that John didn't. There seemed to be an unusual amount of papers where only one candidate had been voted for, and I can only assume a large turnout - including voters who don't usually vote in local elections and don't realise they have three votes - was the cause of that. And Alex received the second highest number of votes for any councillor in the borough (Chris Best was first).

I look forward to working constructively with Cllr Affiku on the issues which are of concern to local people, and am here for any residents of Forest Hill ward who want advice or help.

Best wishes and thank-you again
Philip

PS:

I'd also like to thank SE23.com readers who have an SE23 1## postcode who supported the Liberal Democrats - your ward (Crofton Park) saw what I think is the only Liberal Democrat gain from Labour in London this time round!

New Lib Dem Cllr John Bowen will be only too happy to help you. Until Lewisham Council sets up his email address (I assume cllr_john.bowen@lewisham.gov.uk will work in a couple of days) please do contact me and I'll pass any messages on.

The issue of voter confusion is perhaps worth thinking about. Quite a few people I work with also did not realise that they had three votes when we were discussing things on Friday. In Lewisham with three elections using different systems taking place it is probably not surprising that people were unclear. Even if it does say' vote for three candidates' on the ballot paper.

As I said in the other election thread, "Where did all the votes go?" It would appear that, across these five wards, at least 1 in 8 of those who voted failed to use all three of their votes - 25% of the votes were discarded. This figure does not include those who did not vote at all.

Quote:
Looking at several of the wards

Brockley - Papers Issued 6864. Votes Available 20592. Votes Cast 18860. Votes Spoiled 150. Votes Discarded 1582.
Crofton Park - Papers Issued 6747. Votes Available 20241. Votes Cast 17901. Votes Spoiled 153. Votes Discarded 2187.
Forest Hill - Papers Issued 6619. Votes Available 19857. Votes Cast 18987. Votes Spoiled 117. Votes Discarded 753.
Sydenham - Papers Issued 6711. Votes Available 20133. Votes Cast 18194. Votes Spoiled 186. Votes Discarded 1753.
Perry Vale - Papers Issued 6679. Votes Available 20037. Votes Cast 18318. Votes Spoiled 57. Votes Discarded 1662

Is it really so confusing that almost 25% of those who voted failed to cast three votes for councillors?

Voters are confused - we already have at least three different voting methods here - STV for London and Lewisham Mayors, closed Party list for GLA and first past the post for the other elections.

Maybe the ballot for Borough Councillors should have had three columns or been phrased differently.

There are other systems that are also used in London.
European elections use a party list in a multi-member constituency.

For the GLA we get two votes, so it is not a simple closed party list system but the Additional Member system.

And it is not entirely right to suggest that FPTP is used for local council elections, these use Plurality-at-large.

Personally I particularly dislike the method for electing the Lewisham Mayor, where we have only two votes - we should be able to number every candidate to ensure we have our say in the second round. In the 2010 election approximately 18,000 people did not use their 2nd preferences (17% of voters) and another 4% of voters failed to complete the paper correctly and their votes were regarded as invalid (some of these will have been intentional).

It is time that we found a way to computerise the entire process so that voters are warned when they do not correctly cast a vote, with the additional option of registering a protest vote against all the candidates.
