This may have been posted before but I don't recall seeing it.
I found this whilst researching how the water level in Millwall dock is maintained....

It is odd that all the maps tell us the tow path was on the east side of the canal (the above website does not acknowledged this), but we have been left with an alley way on the west side of the railway.

I wonder if our alley was originally private and just used by the rail company to get to the old signal box along this side.
