World's most petty crime alert: I've had a couple of pairs of wellies in my porch for a while, until this morning sometime when someone nicked them. They weren't visible from the road so, worryingly, they must have walked up to my front door, to check whether anything was worth taking. We're in Whatman Rd, so I guess they may have taken other low-value stuff from others' front gardens in the vicinity. Unless they were stealing to order for the festival season, of course.
I guess the lesson is that whatever you may have in your porch/front garden, no matter how low the resale value, it's probably wise to remove it or nail it down.

Bit of a long shot if both boots are gone, but young foxes also love to drag them away, chew on them for ages and then leave them in random places. I "lost" a pair of wellies and a pair of crocs that way.

I agree. Foxes. We've had Crocks wind up in a neighbour's garden, Kickers chewed to bits and found at the bottom of the garden, dog toys disappear, the bunjee cord on a kids' trampoline chewed in multiple places and, in one instance, the power cable for a pond pump was chewed right through. My only regret was that it wasn't actually switched on at the time. They are vandals.

Absolutely it's foxes. They love anything rubbery and chewy. My son has learned to always bring his football in from the garden now. We've lost more than a few to the foxes (footballs, that is, not sons).

If you have an enclosed porch the wellies may have been taken by someone delivering leaflets. A few years ago I happened to be in my hall when I heard the sound of something dropping through the letterbox in the porch, then the sound of the porch door handle being turned. The porch door was locked so I wasn't worried. When I looked out I saw a leaflet deliverer walking away from the house. Funnily enough I think there were a pair of wellies in the porch at the time.
I sometimes think that being a leaflet deliverer must be a good way of legitimately going from house to house, while also sizing them up for potential thefts or burglaries.

Thanks for the replies, sadly I fear it was not a fox though we have a rather audacious one in the street. I'd rather believe that. However, all four boots (two pairs) disappeared and I'm just not convinced one fox would make three return journeys to pick them up.
However... four wellies.... four feet.... hmm... If anyone should happen to spot a fox in the vicinity wearing two pairs of mismatched wellies then please do confront them on my behalf!
