Hi

Just had a person knocking on my door, he wanted to check my attic to see if I would qualify for loft insulation. Also he claimed that if my boiler was more than 10 years old, and if I had single glass I could also get a grant from the goverment to replace these. He claimed that he was working for nationwide energy (http://www.nesuk.com). And the reason for the grant was that UK had to get in par with the EU energy regulations.

I am quite naive so I invited him in and he took some photos of the loft. Afterwards I got this bad gut feeling that he just wanted to have a look to see if my house was good enough to break in during the Christmas holidays.... Sad

Anyone heard about this upgrade scheme? I know that you can get a grant but would they go around push for it?

There is a genuine scheme on the go and they have been knocking on doors but I think the contractor is Carillon (at least the guy who spoke to us was). There may well be some scams out there but the chap who knocked on our door had ID and showed us all that , and left a glossy brochure etc and contact details, so hopefully your guy was genuine too.

There are some government schemes around that will give grants or discount on home energy improvements. I'd be wary about cold callers in general, because it's hard to compare prices and they may pile on the pressure - although I know Carillion is a big part of the scheme.

The best option is to take a look at the scheme itself. There will be several providers so you can decide whether you want to use the one who contacted you first.

You can go direct to Warm Front here

Or to the Warm Homes Discount here
