Erika just sent me this ...

THE COMMUNITY GARDEN

As a result of pavilion redevelopment works, this vibrant community asset has been disrupted on a number of occasions, and in January of 2014 it was cleared to enable a sewage pipe connection to be re-established to the Mayow Park pavilion. With the help of our volunteers and donations from the community and local businesses including Lewisham Council, A Cut Above Tree Management, Shannon’s Garden Centre, Havelock 11 Studios, Brown & Green and the Caribbean Mix Cricket Club, we have been working hard since March to reinstate the garden.

In early May we learned that we had been successful in our bid for match funding from the Pocket Parks Programme, part of the Transform initiative lead by Groundwork London for the Mayor’s London’s Great Outdoors investment programme. This was fantastic news, not only for ourselves and the volunteers, but for the community at large. The restored and redeveloped Community Garden includes a free nature play area, new healthy eating raised beds, a wildflower seating area for the observation of bees and other pollinators, a large box bordered exhibition bed, a medlar and apple trees, a woodland meadow path for exploring and a drought resistant colour wheel, as well as the reinstated native hedgerow and mini beasts habitats.

WILDTHINGS WEEKENDS

We will be holding a series of WILDTHINGS WEEKENDS this summer as part of the redevelopment (14/15 June, 12/13 July & 09/10 August, 10am – 4pm). These weekends will include food growing and nature and art workshops for kids, getting children and adults alike outside to explore, learn, grow food and play in their local environment. Details available online shortly. Participating during WILDTHINGS will include our artist in residence Zoe Burt, whose textile flax is growing in the exhibition bed this year (Grow A London Garment), author Eva Katzler who will read her latest work “Florentine and Pig and the Spooky Forest Adventure” (tbc), Froglife (a national wildlife charity committed to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles) who will be pond dipping and Wastebusters (an environmental awareness campaign empowering children to reduce waste and conserve resources) who will be running our “Don’t rubbish nature” arts and craft activity.

THE FUTURE
We are very pleased to have recently established our first formal educational community link with a local primary school. Our Lady and St Philip Neri Infant School will be sponsoring a native bumble bee hive for the Community Garden and a new honey bee colony for the project space. They will be starting a Bumblebee Club to visit regularly and report back to the rest of the school on the progress of the hives. We understand that the students will participate with other WILDTHINGS attendees as citizen scientists in the Big Bumblebee Discovery for the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. Finally, we look forward with great enthusiasm to forming a positive and fruitful partnership with the successful café tenderers Brown & Green and will be working to provide them with year round seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruit, as well as floral arrangements for tables, window boxes and hanging baskets.

Our goal is to ensure that the Community Garden continues to provide a vibrant growing and leisure space that promotes healthy eating, incorporates increased areas for outdoor learning, play and contemplation and that is open and accessible to all.

Kindest regards
