Buster Keaton Films from the 20s
A rare survival of a 1920s cinema, The Capitol first opened its doors to the cinema-going public in 1929, with a screening of Man, Woman and Sin.
Renamed the ABC in 1968, the cinema gave its last picture show in October 1973.
There were plans to convert and even demolish the building. However, The Capitol opened as a bingo hall in February 1978, closing in the first week of December 1996.
Good to see it paying tribute to its earlier days.

At present there are no cinemas in Lewisham borough and, with the opening of a cinema in Waltham Forest later this year, it will be the only London Borough without a cinema.
I think Wetherspoons may have one or two things to say about that Michael...
But in broad terms, I agree - would be great to have a cinema in walking distance. Are there any other local, unused venues, that might fit the bill. If a church hall in East Dulwich can become a cinema, why not in FH?

I didn't say it has to be in The Capitol. There are plenty of other possibilities, for example Bell Green, with a massive car park could be a good place to put a cinema and I can think of a couple of other buildings in the town centre that could be converted into cinemas.

One thought I've been sitting on for a while is suggesting the Capitol holds a 'silent cinema'.
Like a silent disco, watchers all wear headphones relaying the movie audio.
Reinstating the upper tier seating for viewers and placing the screen above the bar area, cinema lovers get to enjoy an evening at a local and architecturally important building, whilst regulars could continue uninterrupted.
We could have a silent bingo night too...
I know Michael, I was being slightly facetious re the Capitol! I think a cinema at Bell Green would have been a great idea but I suspect that ship has sailed as I can't quite see where it would go now that we have the retail park and the "trade city" as the next phase but perhaps I'm being unimaginative.
I think now that Forest Hill is increasingly been seen as a great place to live (but we've all known that for years..) a cinema operator could be persuaded to invest in the area (here's hoping!)
