Despite being loyal to T-mobile the signal is useless in the Horniman Heights area. This is not a call for a recommendation of who to go with (that would have to go elsewhere), just a request for factual information on the signal that you get round this side of the tracks and elsewhere in SE23 with the various providers. Are any changes planned?
My T-mobile was bad. My Orange was a little hit and miss - particularly in the summer (I have no idea whether foliage makes a difference to signal strength but there you go).
I've got O2 now and get a pretty solid 3G signal on the Lordship Lane end of Wood Vale and wherever else I go walking with my phone in the area - including the depths of Sydenham Woods (although never checked to see if it's 3G out there)
I'm on Vodaphone and have no problems in FH or Sydenham Woods, but I lose the signal in Lordship Lane between the Plough and Goose Green, for some reason.
They are not called T-NotMobile for nothing.
I find orange rubbish at the top of Taymount Rise, yet it says on the website that reception is good....
My Vodafone loses network coverage between the Harvester and the Dulwich pond on the Sth Circular
I have noticed problems on all networks at the top of the hill (Horniman not Taymount). There is reception but it is weak, often a different handset will work better or lean out the window.
T-mobile/Virgin Mobile share the same transmitters. I have the same problem with coverage from Horniman Gardens down into Lordship Lane by Underhill Road.
A dirty great Mobile and Broadband mast was installed behind a pub in the Forest Hill/ Catford border area some time ago.
You can use the Ofcom site below to find where the mobile masts are in your area and which operator they are for.

I'm moving to Honor Oak next week, and really looking forward to it-having lived in the built up side of SE16 for 17 years, it will be nice to see trees again!
I wanted to take the chance to change my phone from Virgin which is expensive and has terrible coverage. Any suggestions please on networks which work well in SE23....or on ones to avoid?
Thanks very much
Virgin Mobile uses the t-mobile network according to the wikipedia entry
here and from the experience of my other half, the t-mobile signal isn't great in this part of London.
Both o2 and Vodafone do very well in FH/HOP, in my experience. All of this is obviously a bit subjective, and the mobile handset you're using has a major impact. So probably worth holding on to what you've got at first and seeing how it goes.
I'd definitely hang on and see as davidl suggests.
I'm with Virgin and the reception is absolutely fine, apart from the blackspot by the horminan, but I think everyone loses signal there.
T-Mobile is perfect on the South Circ side of Honor Oak. Think there's a mast between the Fire Station and the railway line somewhere.

I'm surprised at this, because I'm on Vodaphone too and can get hardly any signal in the FH end of Sydenham Woods. When I walk back along Sydenham Hill and down Kirkdale, the signal isn't restored until halfway between the top of the hill and the Thorpewood Avenue turn. What am I doing wrong?
