I feel your pain, selfish dog owners are a pain and need dealing with, but its a long road ahead.

I'm a big fan of that fenced off bit in peckham rye park. Hasn't bhf got a big grant? Wouldn't a similar dog free (and dog poo free) zone keep everyone happy (ier) ?
Would it not be cheaper and easier to govern if an area was FOR dogs, fenced off etc, Rather than having most of the park to clean up after the foul owners that are too lazy?
snazy that was my suggestion to the User Group Chair - in fact it was not even as extreme as that, I suggested fencing off the one field that is adjacent to the children's pay area- then those who prefer not to be pestered by other people's dogs and their poo can picnic/fly kites/have their children run around etc. in relative safety. I was told they want to keep the park looking "natural" so unlikely to have more fences. I guess bouncing rottweilers, or the lovely gent hanging his pit/staffy bull terrier cross from the trees the other weekend yards away from a father with two small children, are a "natural" part of life and those who would rather not be near such dogs should continue to avoid the park
But in the Horniman gardens there is one area where dogs can run off the lead, and that seems to work (most of the time) without any fences, so I don't see why they couldn't do something like that - or maybe plant hedges around one field?

Either way I would have thought it would be great to have somewhere that dogs are safe and people are safe from dogs.

In my day dogs ran around biting me and my small friends, and we all played in dog c**p, and none the worse for it
lol however these days we have ethics and common sense, and its always nice when dog owners display some pride and decency
I agree many things have got far too PC these days, however safety around dogs, inc their owners has changed for the worse.
and the types of dogs people have is different, seems particularly bad on BHF - on just two visits to the playground recently I have seen two rottweilers, three dobermann pinschers, a bullmastiff, three pit bull types, and numerous staffies... (I don't even know the breed of the two that charged over for my little one to add them to that list, but they weren't friendly dogs). There's one man I have seen a few times walking a labrador, a fluffy collie type thing I've seen a few times, but very few other dogs that wouldn't be regarded as "guard" dogs...

That's Hilly Fields - not Blythe Hill Fields. Does anyone know what is happening at the playground in Blythe Hill Fields? I can't see anything on Lewisham Council website about it - but I saw a lot of disapointed children as I walked across the Fields on Sunday
I am afraid dog owners are a cross section of society. Many are very polite and do all they can to make sure their canines are not a problem to others. At other end of the scale if the trophy dog etc whose owners will not take any notice of rules or polite requests.
We should have more dog wardens who can shoot any dogs not on a lead at all times , accept in the persons home or fenced garden
Why did we get rid of dog license. 7/6d was something all could afford.

the playground has a fence around it and there are men doing manly stuff with trucks n things - I thought at first they were making the fence higher to protect the children from bad dog owners but (I couldn't see too well from the path in the middle) it appears there is some extensive work going on
The Friends of Blythe Hill Fields put a bid in to the mayor for funding from the Playbuilder Scheme to improve the play area. This bid was successful and, together with some extra funding that Groundworks found, is paying for the re-landscaping and renewing of the playground. Work is due to be finished around early May, with an official opening fun day in early June. The plans look great. The emphasis is on natural materials. The boat will be kept, as will the infant swings and the zip wire.
The Blythe Hill Fields festival will be taking place again - this year on Saturday 3rd July - lots of bands and fun lined up. If you would like to volunteer - we need donkey handlers and lots of general help - or if you would like to have a stall or take part in some way - then contact me on mollhench@hotmail.com in the first instance.
