We have a sofa bed (little tired and faded) and have advertised with photos on this Forum, but nobody seems to be interested. It has to go by Friday and I wondered if anyone out there has any advice on how to give away large items without calling the council and having it thrown into landfill! Already tried Freecycle BTW. We're in Honor Oak.

Hi, the British Heart Foundation come to collect large items, look them up on line, give me a call and they come and collect
When we've not been able to shift stuff through freecycle, we have left stuff on our drive with 'free please take' and it has tended to go. Looks like it might be dry tomorrow so you could try that if all else fails....
Ebay? If priced and worded for a quick sale that should do the trick. I don't think auctions have to be a week long or whatever tho I might be wrong.
Charity sounds a good idea. I have always either left stuff on the pavement or if larger and in good enough condition that I could ask some £ for, I have used gumtree very effectively - selling an old wardrobe that wouldn't fit up the stairs when I moved in, giving away the shed if they would dismantle that weekend (4 offers in 3 hours), motorcycle top box and an old but reliable sewing machine that went to someone two streets down.

I think there is also a local charity (possibly run through the council) to supply furniture and the like to refugees when they are housed. I'm afaid I can't be any less vague than that as I only heard about it third hand and can't remember the name of the organistaion.
furniture is very hard to shift though. we tried to give away a really lovely solid oak sideboard and it was a real struggle. amazing how few people want nice things for free!
I've used this charity before to donate furniture to on behalf of my boss, who was clearing out several large items to make way for the latest models! Emmaus were very grateful. They are a charity who do work with the Homeless. They have projects all over the country and provide work for homeless people renovating furniture that has been donated in their workshops. A more worthy charity for your sofa bed I cannot think of.

I wonder if the people who would like/need the free items don't have cars, so they don't respond because they wonder how they would transport it.
