Does anyone remember the Glenlyn Club behind the station now the banqueting suite. The Stones, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Yardbirds etc all played there. The resident band was Bobby King and the Sabres. Talking 1960's again.

I think my Grandad was the drummer in Bobby King and The Sabres, his name is John Wilmot. He always talks about his drumming days ad this band!
My Dad was a Guitarist in Bobby King and the Sabres. Nick Hirst. He was friends with John Wilmot.

I new your dad and the rest of the band from the 60's from the Oldfield in Greenford your dad and John Curtis were both at my wedding in 1968
Your dad will probably best remember for ending up in the hospital in London on your dads 21st Birthday after a long lunchtime drinking session hope Nick is well and would love to hear from him.

Amazed after 50 years to find a link to Bobby King and the Sabres.
Saw them back in the early 60's, sure Bobby King had red/ginger hair ?
I was a mod around south east London 59/65 and can name a few places where we went for music/dancing and meeting up.
First original mods 1959/1960 onwards.
Younger "little mods" 1964/66 as seen Quadrophenia.
1960/61 Over 21 Club Cecil rooms Charlton.
Black Cat Woolwich, El Partido Lewisham, Savoy Catford, Greenwich Town Hall, La Discoteque Peckham, Glenlyn Peckham Green Man Blackheath , further out Black Prince Bexley , Starlight Rooms Brighton, across the river Chez Don Dalston, but all these just filled in spare time as we were up in town as much as possible mid week and all weekend.
Roaring 20's Carnaby Street, la Discoteque & Flamingo Wardour Street,
Scene Ham Yard and Lyceum Strand , there were loads of other places and coffee bars in Soho.
Because of regular fights between north and south Thames, we rarely crossed the river and same for those north of the Thames coming south.
great to read all the stories and memories from back then. Happy to relate more about early " mod life" if anyone's interested.
Great memories there. I remember the Glenlyn , the El Partido, the Savoy. There was also the Bal Tabrin, which was over the top of the Downham Tavern, there was Mr Smiths along Rushey Green.
The Mods with scooters meeting place " The Stall " near Lewisham clock tower.
Some Saturday nights were not to bad at the Rivolli in Crofton Park opposite the station.
The Dutch house was also good, the King Alfred, the Saxon Tavern, Chiselhurst caves.
There was also a great club by Beckenham junction station , can't remember the name of it now though, I remember the DJ being in an old pink Rolls Royce playing the records.
There was also the Bromley Court Hotel

Music,clubs,clothes,birds coasting it and laughing...a lot...scooters then old cars..then fast cars,yes great days.
We were in Soho 3/4 nights a week, the rest of the week we tried to avoid our regular old local places soon becoming full of little mods (who had started to get on the scene 64/66.)
Best local place to escape them was the Disco in Peckham (bottom of Rye Lane) and pubs in and around the Old Kent Road.

Just came across this forum, my dad was the guitarist in Bobby King and the Sabers, John Joyce (but called himself John Curtis after Tony Curtis I think!). My mum, Helen, can remember the other band members. The family left London and moved to Suffolk with the print works. I'm sure I have old pictures somewhere. He was also in a band called The Citizens.

I would say either 63 or 64.
I so wish The Who, The Stones and Dusty still played there...
We live behind it and the c**p PA driven music from the weddings and religious groups makes our garden unusable on summer evenings.
Personal taste and all that, I know.

I new your dad and the rest of the band from the 60's they used to play in the Oldfield Hotel in Greenford North London your dad and Nick Hirst where both at my wedding in 1968 I also remember your mum Helen I will have to take a snap shot of John and Nick from the old wedding album and post it on-line.
I Hope mum and dad are well and it would be great to hear from your dad after all these years.

Dad sadly passed away 6 years ago now, too young but still loved his music and football.
I'd love to see any pictures you have. I'll have to have a look through Dad's old band photos too.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad I'm now 69 and I think he was a similar age to me I understand that Nick Hirst also died a few years ago but please give my regards to your mum she may remember myself and new wife Pat we called in to see your mum and dad in Brixton in Sept-68 on our way back from out short honeymoon on the south coast
