From This Is Local London:

A hole has opened up on Brockley Rise in Honor Oak.

The hole is reported to have opened opposite St Saviour's Church, near the junction with Herschell Road and Lowther Hill.

Lewisham Council says it has sent an emergency highways team to the scene and the hole is having barriers places around it pending further investigation into the cause.

Heavy traffic is being reported queueing along Stansted Road eastbound at the Catford Hill junction.

Brockley Central (courtesy of Twitter) had the classic comedy reporting of this incident:

A large hole opened up in the road in Brockley Rise this afternoon. Police are looking into it.

Yes, discovered this morning when cycling down Herschell (have always wondered whether this signifies a local connection with the astronomer).

It can be quite hair raising turning into the main road there sometimes. This morning, had my own traffic light - fantastic. Will cause awful tailbacks until this is sorted but I wish the lights could stay! :-)
Nah, please don't let the lights stay - they're all racing through Garthorne now instead. Scary stuff, nearly got run over yesterday eve, unloading bags from my car. I'm not sure what some people think they'll gain from going through a residential street at 40mph. A few seconds, max.
