I'd love to try and catch the laser show for the opening of The Shard - this Thursday 5th at 10.15pm. Where do you think the best view would be - Blythe Hill? I can't remember if there is a clearer view around here somewhere...
this is what it will look like apparently

Well, personally I would have said Cornwall...
With some sadness, I'd have to say "pretty much anywhere in London that isn't a basement or facing the other direction"
Personally, I find it the most preposterous, pretentious and unnecessary building in London. But this is off-topic, and I apologise for spamming in ruthb's thread. I'm sure the views from Blythe Hill will be good.
I love it, and can't wait for the Eye of Sauron to be unveiled at the top

Think we're going to head to Blythe Hill to have a look if weather OK.
So i'm not the only one who finds the outline of the shard reminiscent of Barad-dûr. I've been suggesting this for a while now and most have not really agreed. I think Blythe hill sounds good and may well try there if the weather is up to it.
I feel it makes an excellent and dramatic addition to the London skyline. Nice contrast with the brutalist masterpiece that is the Guy's tower......discuss?
Excellent find - I was going tohave a go at this effect with Photoshop.
Its great when you discover you are not alone......
I quite like it - the Shard and the pic above!
Was trying to figure out the best place too - One Tree Hill would be good but a bit dark to go up there unless in a big group!
I think it's great, brilliant for the surrounding area too what with Forest Hill and Honor Oak only being a 10-12 minute journey away.
The view from One Tree Hill is quite restricted because of the trees, I think Blythe Hill Fields would be better (and less likely that there'll be people in the way).
Having said that, the view from One Tree Hill the other evening was good - see attached pic.

Turns out the answer to the question was: on TV. Didn't see a thing from Blythe Hill

That was a bit rubbish......but nice to go for a walk even though nothing could be seen!
We went up on the hill and waited...and waited... and waited.... Only
to be informed that the laser show was NORTH FACING ONLY and therefore anyone south would not be able to see it.
While we were stood like expectant idiots it was all being televised on SKY news

So unfair, to build such an iconic building south of the river and yet being
'cheap' by not bothering to extend the laser show to the communities that it looms over.

It was a good natured gathering on the hill at any rate.
On the strength of the laser show facing north only I have now decided against the building and will not be buying one of the apartments as a crash pad for when I miss the last train home from LB.
I second that!

If the laser show was facing north London only then it wasn't very good. A friend of mine watched from Ally Pally and said that they saw nothing. That made me feel a little better

The word on Twitter is that the whole thing was a bit of a let down.
