Not sure if anyone else saw this on BBC2 last night, but I thought The Secret History of Our Streets, looking at Deptford High Street, was fascinating, insightful and heart-breaking seeing how Lewisham Council treated its residents (Forest Hill is also mentioned very briefly!!) Well worth a watch on iplayer if you are at all interested in 'local' history.

I saw it too - very interesting. Says a lot about social housing policy in the 70s. And now they're pulling down all those 70s blocks which are falling to bits, while the Georgian and Victorian stuff is all being restored and goes for a fortune. Also about creating ghettoes of social housing - an attlitude which is fortunately changing, with new estates being built mixed with shared ownership and properties for sale.
Camberwell New Road next week!
thanks Hasto - very interesting.
Brilliant program.
Lewisham come out of the program very badly, although they seem to still have the 'old is bad, new is good' mentality.
don't forget it's on again now doing Camberwell Grove - excellent programme
Unlike the Deptford programme, the Camberwell Grove documentary was pretty dull really.
One interesting thing was the 3 lane highway they planned to build in the 60s through the grove, presumably then through East Dulwich and then Forest Hill to Croydon.
We all had a narrow escape there.
