9:15pm tonight get a view of Crystal Palace, London's Eiffel Tower.

Where are the best places in Forest Hill to see Crystal Palace?
Def top of Derby Hill - I think that has to be one of, if not THE highest point in Forest Hill..everything seems to fall away from it Thumbsup
Good choice! I just checked it out on streetview and it is the view I was looking for. I just couldn't remember where it was. I think the flats on Derby Hill Crescent will get a great view.
Horniman Drive also offers a view of the top of the transmitter, but probably not the whole thing.
So does this mean the tower (and its twin brother) will be taken down?
No. The analogue signal is being switched off and replaced with a higher power digital one, but it will still be transmitted from the Crystal Palace tower, just with different equipment attached to it.
If you want to see the whole tower, Lennard Road is a good spot, if you are on the Sydenham side of SE23. You don't need a high spot to see it - there are great views from much of Lower Sydenham, which is in a slight valley, but many of the streets have direct line of sight.
Saw it this morning,(4am),FANTASTIC!!! Tiggywinkle (mrs)

The improved digital signal will still be much lower power than the old analogue.

The old analogue transmitter was 1MW (one MegaWatt, or one million Watts) radiated power. The six new digital signals from Crystal Palace are listed as 200kW (200 thousand Watts). The six old digital signals (pre analogue switch off and digital retune) were 20kW.

So, digital power goes up, yes. In comparison to analogue, it's still less.

The power isn't the important thing with a digital signal though, it's the quality of the digital data received that makes the difference.

Has this been cancelled?
Ooooh, hang on looks like it's starting!
That's a bit rubbish. How much is this costing?
Did anyone get a good view?

I wandered around getting a bit damp in the drizzle. Saw a pinky purply glow coming from Crystal Palace's direction and later on a few beams of light, but not much else.
It's on again tomorrow night, in case you want to watch a second time.
It was a bit washed out. I got a reasonable view from the bottom of the transmitter where there was almost a crowd of people and then I found Radlet Avenue has a good view across Baxters Field. Maybe the weather will be better tomorrow.
Ah didn't realise it's going to be repeated. I'll definitely try again tomorrow..shame it wasn't better publicised for such a historic event in our broadcasting history.

Great photos!
Yes thanks for posting those.
