Beats me WHY people insist on leaving car keys on hall tables within reach.
My car keys are always in my coat pocket and never left where they are easily seen. How many times are we warned NOT to leave keys where these evil scroats can get hold of them.
A friend of mine had 2 BMWs (his and his wife's) stolen on the same night. They removed a double glazed window pane from his front room and got in and stole both sets of keys from his hall table. His glazing was the older type where the panes were fitted from the outside, and easily removed. He has since had it replaced with the modern ones fitted from inside. Fortunately both cars were fitted with trackers and were recovered later in the day, with just a few personal effects missing.
Easy to be wise after the event. Following publicity about lock bumping I guess lots of people deadlock their front doors at night. Having done which they will think it sensible to leave keys near the door so they can get out if they need to. The fear of being unable to get out in a fire might be greater than thoughts of 'scroats' getting the keys by whatever means. Must admit that the idea of people breaking in (rather than fishing through the letterbox) simply to get the car keys is't one that I had thought much about.
Mmm, I'd prefer to be burgled than not be able to find my front door keys in a fire. I've seen minor house fires and the air is absolutely black; no chance of quickly going to find the keys in a distant cupboard. I guess that doesn't apply to car keys though and I'm going to take note and keep ours out of sight now.
This happened to my mum and dad last year they live in Sydenham. Took the best part of 6 months to get the car back. Really sorry that its happened to you.

Re keys - I take mine upstairs with me after I lock up for the night. They are right by the bed so in an emergency I'll be able to find them, lights or no lights. My car keys and house keys are all together on the one ring.
Simples.
I'm amazed you want to tell everyone that, rhsdunlop, given that your identity is not exactly hidden...
Why? If a thief has a choice between hooking someone's keys from the hall table or disabling my alarm system, avoiding tripping over the sleeping cats on the stairs and negotiating with my 6ft tall husband who keeps a baseball bat on his side of the bed, to get my car keys, I'm pretty sure I know which one they'll go for.
Although I think the sheep with pockets is the easiest target right now.
