Just witnessed on Perry Vale outside one of the Christmas Houses: mature tree being taken down...I was watching as I thought it a shame...branches off and down to about a 12ft trunk when I noticed the 'professionals' had tied a thin rope around it and were attempting to pull it over using a small roofers truck...2nd time lucky...oh, there goes the bus shelter.
I walked past the same disaster waiting to happen this morning too. Didnt look too 'professional' at all!

Seeing trees being done reminds me I need to get mine done though.
Sadly the bus shelter didn't survive.
They don't usually fell a tree unless it is diseased or damaged or dangerous. I know this because they refused to cut down the tree outside my house although my neighbour said he had seen it swaying in the wind. A few days later it fell on my house.

Seriously though, I presume the owner of the property and/or the contractors working for them will be financially accountable to the damage? I can only speculate as to why the tree was felled but it was right alongside a fairly deep trench that had been cut into the ground between the house and the pavement so I guess the roots were severed as part of that.
Digging trenches for cables has sometimes damaged tre roots.
The Hornbeam tree has been for dead many years, a fungus has been growing in/on it for a long time and chunks of bark have been falling off recently, only the ivy seemed to be holding it on so has become dangerous. As the landlord is having work done on the 1st floor, he will be landscaping the garden when the work is completed.
It is a shame to see any tree go, but what was left was a bit of an eye sore.
Yup, looking at the
Google Streetview of the tree (which are generally from 2009) it doesn't look too healthy (although there are some leaves back then). Not sure how dangerous it could have been though, it took them a good few goes to tug it over. Still, if it was dead, fair do's...just a shame it wasn't done a little more professionally. On one of their first attempts there was one guy on the pavement to stop people going near but he wasn't doing much and didn't stop a woman with small kids from getting within range. Luckily they failed that time.
