Reminds me of half day closing when I was growing up. (not in London). Was there ever one of these in Forest Hill? I seem to remember something some years ago, either Wednesday or Thursday. Strange tradition but I suppose it made up for having to open on Saturdays.

Maplins was reported to have been looted last night. Haven't heard of anything today beyond a smashed window at W H Smith.

Just walked from HOP station up Devonshire Road - having a quick look up to HOP parade - all quiet from the looks of things.

Great, thank you

ooooooh spooky, Devonshire Road does not have many cars parked HOP station end.

Police were on the streets at 6:30pm. There wasn't any trouble just a good visible police presence in the town centre. Very reassuring.

All good in HOP and Brockley Rise when I came through around 7pm

The police have published an update and guidance for business owners (which is also useful for residents). This can be read on their website.
To summarise, they had 16,000 police on duty last night, compared to 6,000 the night before and 3,500 on a typical night. This is why you saw officers in the Town Centre last night. I know that people are scared, but the rioting in Lewisham was carried out by approximately 150-200 people, compared to a Borough population (in 2001) of 248,922. The majority of people are not involved. We have also been informed that the break in at Maplins was carried out by one car load of opportunistic individuals, rather than a rioting mob.
Please take care, but also keep things in perspective.

Good news but wonder how long the police will be around in large numbers as presumably any troublemakers will wait until they have all been stood down before trying this again.
I do think however that the early closing yesterday was part of an informal curfew in order to assist the situation. Not surprising really but still don't understand our department being given 10 minutes to leave our building in Brixton! I can understand businesses and employers being cautious but think this was a little over cautious.

Roz. Caution V possible brick on your head? Easy choice.
The less honest people on the streets in times of rioting the less chance of innocent people getting caught up in violence. That way the police can be sure if there is a mob it's not there to buy milk at Sainsburys.

Dear all - I am new to this site, but it proved invaluable yesterday when I was checking out what was going on riot wise. What is Forest Hill looking like this afternoon? It was like a ghots town last night - quite eery

One of the drivers at Forest Hill Cars just told me that the Tesco garage was hit late last night. But they only took a few packets of cigarettes and alcohol.

Quite as anything. Sainsburys going to close at 8pm tonight but that's about it.

Hopefully tomorrow we can feel more relaxed. I am beginning to feel angry about these people keeping me and everyone else in at night and fearful of going out. I won't forgive anyone who started a fire in a bin outside my childrens nursery. It could so easily have spread.
