Full Version: Burglary via the front door

There was a burglary in David's Road the night before last, via the front door. The door was shut and locked on a normal lock, but with no additional deadlock. Apparently the burglars used some device to open the door, despite the lock. The police say there have been a spate of these.

Thus, it seems, we need to be using a deadlock as well.
I know people burgled in Ewelme road yesterday in broad daylight. They'd just had new locks fitted!
What the dickens is going on with the criminal classes.

The justice system has gotten far too soft.
Yale locks are susceptible to a new technique called lock bumping.

It does not damage the lock. So it is difficult to prove to your insurance company that you have been burgled.

You cannot rely on a yale lock alone. However, there may be some similartypes of lock that cannot be bumped.
I accidentally locked myself out of my house a few years back (putting the bins out and pulled the door behind me thinking I had my keys - I didn't) - the locksmith got in to the house so quickly I have always been very aware of the need to make sure that the deadlock is on when we're out or at night - yale lock (or similar) just isn't sufficient security.
I thought it was well known that you should not rely on Yale locks alone.
It has been part of insurance policies for years and doubt if any company will pay out if you only had a Yale lock.
Hey Brian - i dont think the lock manufacturer is an issue here, its the type of lock
Yale is used as a generic name for that type of lock, regardless of manufacturer, like e.g. Hoover.
I know shzl400 and i am not being pedantic however it hurts the brand by using yale in this context.

Disclaimer i do not work for yale or have a vested interest Laugh
You can get rim locks (the really generic term for a Yale lock) with deadbolt action - just look for BS3621, but even these are susceptible to 'bumping'.

If you want to be shocked, look on youtube for examples of how quickly any lock can be picked / bumped.
